Default Anyone make their own muffler before?

As the title says, anyone tried fabricating a muffler? What packing material did you use? What was the sound like?

I'm going to try it out pretty soon. If it's cool I'll post it, if it sucks, I'll pretend it never happened.

I've got all the parts to my aluminum one finished but not yet assembled. I'd love to pack it with something if anyone has any sources for a quality packing. Dims are 5" OD, 3" perf core ID, 12" long muffled section.

Butch11a made mine, they look great and still sound quiet enough.

Unless it's something you can't buy, I wouldn't bother building one.

I built one, but it was an offset 3.5" in/dual 2.5" out to look like a stock exhaust. For internal tubing, http://www.perftubes.com/DesktopDefault.aspx
Go to a motorcycle shop and get some exhaust pipe silencer material. I used a 4-layer FMF kit that had SS mesh, SS wool, woven fiberglass, and loose fiberglass packing material. The muffler cost me about $100 in materials and was a major pain in the ***. If you can buy a muffler that meets your needs, do it.

I'll be building a 4" aluminum muffler in the future though...not sure how good of an idea it is though.

Yes, thats exactly what I was wanting to build, except in a 2.5" aluminium core. Let me know how it goes!

Why not make a chambered muffler? No worries about packing and they are fairly simple.
