Default Lost my only key... What can I do

The car is safely parked in my garage. I think I accidentally threw my key in the

garbage can and the garbage truck made it's rounds yesterday. when I got my

car it didn't have a key and I had to make a copy, so I had a locksmith make me

one for like $250, b/c my car was not mobile due to an accident here is the link

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1089875. I really don't want

that to happen. let me know what I can do. I am not a thief just looking for some

help.

Go to a dealership with proof of ownership and they can get you a key.

Acura/Honda (and most dealerships) can make you a key if you bring your registration, which hopefully isn't in your glove box

Explain the situation to the dealership. They'll probably tell you they'll make a key and send someone to your home with it who can program it.

They just need the key code which came with your cars owners packet but is also stored in their computer files.

Call the dealership service desk and explain the situation. Tell them you own the car and can prove ownership and whatnot and have them look up your key code.

They will be able to make a key without ever touching the car.

Most likely they will just require substantial proof of ownership.

Shittier dealerships used to charge uber $$$ to do this. So don't think you might get it all for free or just the cost of the key.

That's true for the '97-98 which didn't come with the immobilizer. But I think he's right, they need to program the key for the immobilizer (or vice versa) with a key for an '00-01.

In any case, just ask the dealer. They should know how to handle it.

I've done it.

When I bought my car it only came with one black key and one valet key. I picked it up outside of Hartford and promptly drove to Ny. Didn't have time to waste that particular day.

Schaller Acuras own service manager told me what to do, just what I posted above when I got to Ny and my local dealership. I went on my leisure time and did just that. I supplied my license, registration and insurance card, as well as the key tag attached to the keys I already had. Just the tag mind you. And they made a key for me right away. Since the original key loss was a dealer error, it was all covered cost wise and I just walked away with a new key.

But I've heard horror stories of being charged upwards of $200. to $400. for the fuggin thing.

Best advice is to call first, then show up with all the proof of ownership they request, almost like proving who you are at the DMV.

But it can be done the way I listed it.

Yeah but you still have too program the key because the car will not start. So you still have to get the car too the dealer.

Yes, the key will have to be programmed, AND cut.

But, you don't need to bring the car to the dealer IF they can find the key code in their service computers history OR you provide them with the tab with the code that came with the car with the owners package.

Here's the best way to do it. Get a dummy key without immobilzer cut by the VIN. This will let you access the drivers door of the car and let you turn your car to the ON position to limit the steering wheel for "locking." Now you can push your car out of the garage. Have a tow truck pick up the car and tow it to your nearest Acura dealership. The dealership can only program a key with the vehicle there. The dealership will obtain a one-day valid immobilizer password and key code from Honda's database. Wait for your key to be ready and drive home.

It's a little metal tab with numbers on it that was attached to the keys in the leather bound book.

From my understanding Tom, the tab is just the code for the key cutting, and the key program code itself is seperate and within the dealerships service computer. But this I am Not 100% certain of.

Maybe I can find it, but that's slim since my owners booklet was stolen and I'm not sure where the tab is right now.

Can always find someone with a JDM ECU or OBD2b-OBD1 harness and then you wont need immobilizer, and it will get you to the dealership where they can make it for you at the spot.

The immobilizer system has to be programmed to 'learn' a new key, using either the PGM-Tester or the HDS. Just having an immobilizer key that turns in the ignition is not sufficient. The dealership can cut a non-immobilizer key and give you a code for starting the car that involves using the brake pedal, which will allow you to drive the vehicle to the dealership for proper programming.
If you had an original key, the dealership could cut you a 'T5' key. The 'T5' key is programmed using a machine that reads the original key and clones the code to the new key.

You don't even have to prove ownership @ most dealerships

<--Scared because the black tape blocking his Vin on his registration was peeled off a few weeks ago

Yeah they only need your car physically there if you get a new ignition. If the ignition is the same one you had since stock they will not need anything but proof of ownership.

They can program a key at the dealer for yo no problem with out the car there.

They use the vin to look up the key code and everything from the vin.

Some dealers will do it for $50 some will charge you $2-400 dollars.

If they say they need the car they are bsing you.

We are talking about 00-01 ITR's here with the immobilizer function. You NEED the car there to program the key. The only way around this is by using the "brake code" that most if any dealer will tell you about. Immobilizer equipped vehicles MUST have the vehicle present if all keys are lost.

Why do you insist this?

What can you back this up with?

I've had my 2001 R key copied without the need to bring the car to the dealership.

I have no reason to lie.

I brought the key tag and VIN in, showed proof of ownership and identification and they looked up whatever they needed to and just made a key for me voila! A brand new key that works perfectly fine.

No exchange for anything otherwise and they Definitely did Not need, use or even enter my car for that matter. Heck I didn't even drive the car there when I picked up the key.

End of story, done deal.

And why is this post dragging, on and on and on and on and on.....

How the fugg some of you people think they need the whole friggen car to reprogram the immobilizer for a key is beyond me. It's the other way around, You code/program the Key.

Please explain then, the well known scam where thieves with guys on the inside are gettin keys made and just driving off with our 2000 and 2001 R's based just on our VIN's as Opie eluded to above.
