Default Just moved to california, my b18 00 civic si swap didnt pass smog check :(

So I have a b18c2 jdm engine swap into my 00 civic si and recently relocated to San Diego. Went in to get a smog check, and it passed emmisions, but they failed me for three things I was hoping my fellow HT ppl can help me since im not tooo engine/car inclined.

I have a p72 ecu also btw....

Three weird things I was hoping maybe anyone could lead me to somewhere around the area that could help or help shed some light for me....

I just noticed that on the aem intake, the electronic part of the intake isnt hooked up! And there is no plug anywhere to plug into the intake....I just really noticed this, but knew the intake wasnt working right...but they failed me for that b/c the electrnic plug wasnt plugged in on the intake...any answers for this I cant believe teh shop didnt plug this in when they did the swap...?

2nd Failed me on was o2 sensors - pretty much said I didnt have them - I understand this part and woudl lvoe someone to recomend me a good place to take this to get done or any suggestions

3rd thing he failed me on was mil failed b/c obd communication - he ssaid something about odb2 electric problem - the ecu is working just fine and I have the secondairies wired and all so I have no clue what could be wrong here

I appreciate any help as I trust this community always....it sucks b/c I passed the emissions test but failed b/c of prett ymuch it was swapped I think..and I just paid 53 bucks to some ******* to fail me..Thanks all, i know you can help with this, im hopin this car can pass somehow! I really love it.

Thanks!

Brandon

What obd is your ECU and what obd is your engine? I believe that may answer the third question.

I'm going to assume you don't have any CELs but would there would they fail you for putting an older engine into a new body? That's probably not it, I was more just assuming the difference between the sensors. Being that the swap obd2 to obd1. Giving ideas.

Its because u have an obd1 engine into a obd2 car. U wouldnt have the 02 sensors, or the intake sensor b/ AN OBD1 CAR DOESNT HAVE THEM!!!! Im assuming b/ u have a conversion harness, ur interior wiring is obd2 n the shop didnt want to completely redo the cars wiring. U need s obd2 ecu along w/ a obd2 engine conversion. Some ppl say its not worth it... i have it on my car a 2000 civic ex w/ a obd2 converted b16sirII(obd1 jdm). There were a few sensors that were needed. So I used my d series engine harness(obd2) so the wiring was there. Then I swapped some needed obd2 sernsors, obd2 oil pump w/ the gear. Im runnin the 99-00 civic si ecu. No cel light, its now a legit obd2 car.

If you don't have any CEL's going off then I would say the shop probably pulled the bulb out when they swapped, and that there are several codes stored...I'm surprised the shop didn't turn you away when they saw it has a 92' engine, thats not legal in CA. I really don't know how you can fix this as a 92' engine will never be legal in CA unless you find a shop and ask how much is it going to cost to pass( usually $200-$300)

Yeah, I think the only way for you to pass with your current engine is to find some shop that will "pass" you for a fee.

Good luck

Come on guys do you just post without even reading the previous posts?

This is your ansewer right here... If you want to keep the car and the motor and pass smog legit (which in Cali you are going to have to sooner or later), this is the only way to do it. He explained all of your problems and why they are happening, and also what you have to do to fix it. In california you can not put an older engine in a newer car, just like you can't put a JDM engine in your car. But there is a twist to these rules, If you have all of teh same Electronics and sensors on the older motor it is basically the same engine to them. They only look at certain things and those are all of the emissions devices and your ECU, if you have all the correct stuff, out of your car or a newer one of the same class than you will pass just fine... So go get yourself an OBD2 harness and a couple new sensors and you will be good to go...

Not entirely true...ALL smog techs are supposed to verify the year of the engine before they do any tests...and about 80% of them will check. So I guess it's a matter of luck. And if a CHP ever sends you to a ref station you can be sure thats the first thing they are going to check. It's no joke anymore in CA.

depends on the kind of day they are having when you get pulled over....and if you can outrun them. You can easily outrun the Caprice's but the Camaro's might get you.

Just drill a hole into your intake, stick a grommet in the hole, and stick your IAT sensor into the grommet. That's what I did for my friend.

Problem #1 solved.

So you mean there is no IAT? What happened to it? It's small and black with a nipple.

btw its gonna be illegal to have that engine in there. You're gonna be in some deep **** if you get pulled over and they tell you to pop the hood.

You're supposed to have an engine of the same or newer year of your vehicle.
