i've heard of many other people having this problem, and its a real pain in the *** while driving.
when you're driving, the radio randomly switches off, and sometimes turns back on.
i narrowed it down to faulty electronics in my ignition switch, because it would come back or go away when i moved the key around
i picked up one of my spare steering columns to figure out how to take it apart, then did it real quick.
first off, take off the steering wheel. there's a 19 mm bolt under the center piece, if you can't figure this out, good luck with the rest of the how-to.
i realize you don't HAVE to take it off, but it saves time and makes it easier.
behind the wheel, there is a metal ring that has to come off, it helps hold the plastic trim pieces together:

see why i had you take off the wheel?
after that, take off the three phillips screws holding the bottom cover on, and pull it down. there are plastic clips holding it to the top half, just pull, assuming you took the three screws out.
while you're at it, pull the top half out. it's only held in by that ring and the bottom half.
now, the wiring is exposed. unplug the two plugs, and then unscrew the two switches from the ignition, the round one is best taken off with a 6 mm combination wrench:

now, except for a plastic clip, the whole harness will pull out.
pulling the clips back, take the cap off the round switch, clean the terminals, and apply a little grease to them so that they won't burn and arc anymore.

and put it back together how it was. you'll figure out how it was, theres not too many ways it'll go, just remember how you took it apart.
now, in hayne's fashion, "installation is the reverse of removal," but really, its not hard. i got it done in 20 minutes while talking to someone.
now, as a reward for anyone who read through this all, how many weird things can you see in this interior shot?

i'll start out by saying it's a '90 hatch, and the shift **** is out of a second gen civic.

hmm i dont have that problem :D i guess you like the crx but want passengers in the back :D
thats amazing. the radio just started acting up on me yesterday. and it was right after i had turned off the car, then turned it back on immediately because i realized i forgot something and had to go right back. i figured the quick turning of the ignition had something to do with it. interesting. thanks for sharing.

markdman: lighten up, its not like i told people how to take a key cylinder out or anything.
and, by your logic, it would be "how to start anybody's civic" because it'll work on any, but the steering lock's there. but, rather than sitting and unscrewing it, it would be easier to just hotwire it, and don't tell me most car theives don't already know how to hotwire a car.
besides, remember, the steering lock's there.
these car's have some of the worst locking systems, right up there with old vw's and old gm's. i don't rely on my keys to keep my car from starting.
d16efhatch: the seat is the stock dx seat, with a tshirt over it because its torn.
i have a pair of perfect 89 crx si seats, but i'm too afraid to use them because the foam on the bottom bolster's not even torn.
the story is, i had an 89 crx si that got rearended, pictures coming soon, and i got this hatch shell that had the front messed up (bumper was vandalized, fenders were rusted).
it had never been in an accident, but it had way over a quarter of a million miles on it.
so i just switched everything from the crx to it, including the rear sway, etc.

Droppedcrxsi useto have the same problem, hasn't happened for a while but then again, it was associated with the fan drawing too much current along with the deck.
And anyone thats going to steal your civic, already knows how, and anyone that wants to know, can use google to find out, it all comes down to good parenting LOL parents raise your chilluns not to steal cars.

Awesome write up and pictures. I've been scratching my head over this problem for a month now. This really did the trick. My hatch starts stronger than it ever has now. As for stealing cars, look up tow truck driving 101 to see how to steal any car regardless of security measures. Thanks again.
