weird wiring problem, please help
yesterday i took the piece of crap clarion out of my civic in favor of my pioneer premier deck. I have a universal deck harness plugged into my OEM one, so i havent cut any wires or anything. so i go to wire it up, i made sure everything went to the corect wire, and no worky. so i proceeded to test different wires plugging themn up together until it worked.
So i got it working, but not very well. I have to turn it on every time i start the car and it loses all stations and memory of what track you were on (sucks with an mp3 cd and you were on like track 80) Also it seems that the clock in my dash resets to 1:00 every time too now, but i attribute this to my bad wiring.
when i say harness, im referring to my universal deck harness that is plugged into my OEM one. and when i say pioneer im referring to the pioneer harness.
harness red is ignotion/accessory wire
harness yellow is battery/memory wire
pioneer red is ignition (to electrical terminal controlled by ignition switch 12v DC)
pioneer yellow is constant (to terminal always supplied with power regardless of ignition switch position)
Now i tried different combinations of these but the only that gets ANY power is when all 4 are wired up TOGETHER. that makes it to where i can at least turn it on and hear SOMETHING. it has no memory and my clock is messed up because of this. the orange wire on the universal harness is unused, as well as the blue wire, which is power antenna wire (i dont have this)
So now how do i get it to work correctly? is there something im missing thats obvious? i drive a 95 civic ex 4 door just FYI.
Thanks much

That is very strange if you are connecting the memory wire from car to the memory wire on the radio and it's not working. I have only seen this once before on a friends car and we just ran a wire straight from the battery to the memory wire on the radio. Worked fine, but you may want get a local stereo shop to try and trace the wires to find out what is causing the factory memory wire to not work.
I dont really want to take it to a shop now that ive done all the work and im probably just 1 or 2 wires off from fixing it. Should there be any place where i wire up 3 or more wires together? i mean i was surprised it worked with all 4 tied together, but i know thats not right... it should go red to red because those are the ignition wires right... then what about the yellows, harness is batter/memory and pioneer is battery constant... what should go to the battery constant
1. Unplug the radio completly, see if the clock is still reseting to 1:00.
2. Unplug the clock, see if the radio is still losing it's memory.
3. a) Test the yellow/memory wire to see if it is staying on when you turn the car off. I recommend using a voltmeter (you can pick them up real cheap at radio shack) or you can also use one of those test light things (see links below).
b) First run this test with both the clock and radio unplugged. If the wire is losing it's voltage, then you can be somewhat sure the problem is not your wiring (since your wiring is not plugged in right now). If the power is staying on (like it is supposed to), run the test again with only the clock plugged in. Again, since your wiring is not plugged in, it should remain on (also check that the clock's time stays).
c) Run the test again with only the radio plugged in. With the car off, and the radio plugged in, you should still be able to poke the multimeter/test light probe into the electrical socket.
4. Run the same test in 3. but on the red/accesory wire.
Let me know how you make out!

you just dont have power to the yellow wire. look under your dash and see if your ground is loose. the egs have a ground that bolts to the chassis kinda up behind the dash clock, if thats loose or not hooked up itll cause all sorts of crazy probs.. and if you can get it to work test the yellow wire (constant power) at the under dash fuse box, use a multimeter.. see if it has power going through it. if it does you have a short or bad ground. if not you can get constant power out of the front of the fuse box. above the fuse there should be 5 tabs where wires or plugs can go. i think 2 are constant power 2 are ignition power and 1 headlights (i think) just get a plug from radioshack and wire the underdash constant power up to one of those.
ps. make sure to check all fuses before any of this!

Thanks much</TD></TR></TABLE> Did you check the 7.5A backup power fuse in the engine bay fusebox? Some of todays HUs have amps in them that need more then 7.5A of power, you may have to run the Pioneers yellow wire to the batt., or better run a fused, [at the batt.] 10ga power wire from the batt. pos. (+) term. to to the back of the HU, and wire the yellow to it, just like you would wire power to an amp.
DO NOT install a bigger fuse in place of the 7.5A one , you can DAMAGE the wire harness, big $ big PITA and you can't draw enough power, [for the HU] through that wire anyway

ok make sure the harness is wired correctly to the OEM wires/harness.
oem colors /color stripe - what they are
white/blue - yellow (constant)
yellow/red - red (12 v power)
black - black (ground)
and i replaced my underhood radio fuse with a 10 amp.

I skimmed over the post. So I dunno if this was mentioned.
Did you have a good ground?
I know the stereo wont work if it is not grounded.
Also if your ground is bad it will intermittently reset.
Sometimes when you touch it sometimes when you hit bumps.
Good luck.

you need memory for that audio of yours, the same thing happened to my car too when i was hooking up my new stereo. test one of the fuses under your driver side dash with a voltmeter or test light and see if it has power running, if it does then hook up your memory (yellow wire of pioneer) to this fuse, if not then test for another fuse that has power. You don't have to wire up another wire from the battery to the stereo's memory wire cause thats gonna be one long *** wire. Hope this helps. Make sure to have the clock unplugged and then hook up the memory, then plug the clock or vice versa.
UPDATE:
SO im messing with it some more, and instead of having both yellows and both red all hooked up, with no memory for my deck or my clock, i got it to work like this:
i have the yellow constant and the red ignition on the pioneer harness hooked up to the red ignition on the universal harness. the radio comes on when i turn the key and it remembers my stations. but all is not gravy. that OEM white/blue which is the main battery/memory wire, is NOT hooked up at all. this is probably the reason my clock wont come on now unless i am pressing the reset button but it stays at 1:00.
This is the only wire combination we could find to make the stereo function properly, but its at the expense of my clock. and it just plain doesnt make sense that there is nothing to hook up my battery/memory wire to.
