I could be just a tad jumpey because i've had so many problems with running cars in the past year, but i just swapped a d16y7 into my 89 hatch as my daily, and the fans dont seem to be turning on.

I let the car run for about 10-15 minutes, and the fans still didn't turn on. There seemed to be a small leek in my upper radiator hose, but that also told me the engine was getting a little hot, but i cant tell yet. Just want to make sure i have everything right for the fans to kick on.

and i searched

D16y7 head and block.
- D16a6 wiring harness
-pm6 ecu
- everything else off the A6


There are two sensors from the A6, which would go into two prongs on the back of the A6 block, but it isn't there for the y7. I tried taking out the prongs from the A6 and putting it on the y7, but the threading is much larger on the y7. The spot for it on the y7, just has a flat bolt, maybe a 22mm,, something around there, with no prong, or connection. When the flat bolt is taken off, you can see where the collant would fill around the cylinder walls, and there is also threds there for which i think would be a sensor instead of that bolt.

Would this be why my fans aren't turning on?.. does that sensor tell the collant temperature, then tell the computer to switch the fans on.


Any help would be appreciated, i just dont want to overheat this bitch before i get her on the road.

One prong could be for the coolant temp sensor and the other for the coolant temp sender. Thats my best guess. I would try asking in the EG+ forum, they have to know more about this engine and if you can use the y7 sensors and wire them to your a6 harness. Dunno, just taking a guess.

I would look at a wiring diagram for both cars also.

thanks man.. i'm gonna try that. .. I really do think its the coolant temp sensor and sender.. since there is 2.. but i find it really odd that it isn't there, considering that this engine was in a car, and the fans had to be able to turn on in the stock car.

Rywire

You cut off the prongs, and wire it to a 2 pin round plug and install on the thermostat housing brown plug.

AHA! so thats it!.. its good i didn't use the thermostat housing from my A6, which i was going to do. I didn't think that plug mattered at all off the y7 (brown plug)!!! ***,,lol.. i just realized that i sold the A6 block i had with the prongs...time to call some friends.... hmm.. i might not even need the prongs???&gt;.. just something to slide into the connections from the harness, and wire it to the two prongs in the brown clip? think tht will work?.. not sure if the harness side will read it correctly though..
