I was looking to get some Axxis Ultimates for my Civic EX. I've found some good prices on Nopi.com, but I noticed that the front pads for a NON ABS (rear drum) 93-95 EX 2dr are $20 more than the ABS version ($61 vs. $41). I thought ABS, and NON ABS used the same front calipers.
My question: What is the difference between the ABS & NON ABS front brake pads for the Civic EX Coupe

the non-abs calipers are smaller, the ABS calipers are the same as the integra LS/RS/GS/GSR calipers.
there reason why the non abs is more is most likely because they don't sell that many of them

I thought that the smaller EX caliper could use the same pad as the Integra Caliper. Is this not the case?
Also, When you say "Smaller" caliper, your refering to the piston size correct?

I looked up the calipers too on SL Honda:
ABS is the 17CL-14VN
NON ABS is the 16CL-14VN

yes they are different trust me, i have been threw the parts book numerous times trying to figure out what parts cross referance.
im not 100% SURE on the difference but i thought the actuall surface area of the backing plates were different, the non-abs one of course being smaller, but im not 100% sure on that.
only thing i know for sure is that 92-95 SI with ABS (when offered with ABS) and 93-95 EX with abs share the same caliper as the integra (non type R)

my experience has been with a 93 civic ex, non-ABS car but afaik, the caliper body itself is the same, the difference is in the pad holder/pad shape. the non-ABS cars use what is commonly refferred to as the "del sol" pad. give matt a call at carbotech, he knows all about the two. i have the expensive pad on my car with square-ish tabs on the backing plate about .5" to .75" thick. the more expensive pad should fit the 16CL-14VN caliper.
eh, don't know if i helped any or not...

Ok so i have been confirmed, and now that you mentioned the "del sol" pads, you are right. Chris races a del sol and i have heard him mention the difference numerous times

Here is the NON ABS 16CL-14VN brake assembly (EX 2dr & Del Sol VTEC pad/caliper):

Here is the ABS 17CL-14VN brake assembly (ABS Civic & All Integras):

When comparing the two side by side, you can plainly see that the pad size is different. Also, the pictures show that the "Del Sol" pad is the one that doesn't have the tabs on the pads.
I just think it's lame that you have to pay so much more money for less pad...

IIRC they both use the same rotor, and spindel so you can swap it out to the abs/integra caliper and have more pad, and pay less.

del Sol pad is D273. Same pad as the DX, VX, etc
Integra, Civic Si & Civic EX (w/abs) is D617.
Different knuckle. Different caliper. Same spline for the axle. Different size rotor to the two versions I ref. above.
Civic EX rotor is the same size w/abs or not.

For the IT rule nerds ... Given the update/backdate rule for the same vehicle line (all SI and EX from 92-95), this would mean that you could go with the abs caliper/pad/rotor setup right? ...in comming
I ask this because I now certain ITS RX-7s can switch to the aluminum hood and stearing rack.

When they say "Del Sol" pads, I'm pretty sure they are refering to the 94 Del Sol VTEC. This NON ABS Del sol came with 10.2" EX front brakes and a 7/8" master cylinder. All other NON ABS Del Sol's had 9.5" front rotors & Akebono Calipers, and all ABS Del Sol's had integra 10.2" front brakes...

del Sol I was referring to = S & Si not the 'VTEC' (B16) model. I used it to ref. the 9.5" rotor cars.
Other cars I ref. were meant to represent the 10.2" rotor cars.
HTH.
