Throwout bearing or... ??
I cannot seem to find a definitive answer to this problem even after searching and reading through pages of threads w/similar symptoms.
I get a kind of whirring/clicking type sound when I am at idle with the clutch disengaged and the tranny in neutral. As soon as you engage the clutch the sound disappears. This is not the only time it makes this sound though, it also makes it while accelerating through first and second gear.
From what I have read so far half of everybody says throw-out/release bearing, the other half say input shaft bearing. Then there is the added dilemma that I have read the throwout bearing would be the opposite, it would only make noise when the clutch is fully depressed. Then there are the people who have replaced all of that and continue to get the sound.
If it is the throwout bearing, fine, I'll replace the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and have the flywheel resurfaced. If it is the input shaft bearing, though, I refuse to pay 1K+ to have the tranny rebuilt so i'd prolly just find a used tranny somewhere. Besides that, though, could there be more things that would be causing the problem?
Anyone have good transmission knowledge?

if it makes the noise with the clutch pedal depressed (which disengages the transmission) it is the throwout bearing - if it makes the noise with clutch pedal out (so that transmission input shaft is turning, either in gear or neutral) it is in the transmission and most likely the input shaft bearing
Trending Topics
The only time it does not make the sound is when the clutch is depressed and 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. I'm guessing that I should probably just replace the transmission then. Anybody know where I can find a HF tranny? (I want to retain gas mileage)
IT IS NOT THE THROWOUT BEARING. A lot of misinfo here.
If it makes the noise with the car in neutral and no pedals depressed, the bearing that is bad is internal. The noise stops when you press the clutch in [tranny stops spinning, now the throwout bearing is spinning]. I have rebuilt 5 honda transmissions, all with great success. It really isn't THAT hard if you have any mechanical inclinations. The problem with just buying another used tranny is that it will probably be at least 10 years old and is sure to develop a similar problem sooner than later. Also be aware that it might not be your input shaft bearing, but another bearing inside the tranny. Most of the trannys I have rebuilt so far had a different bearing going out on it.
If you're anywhere local to me and need some tranny help, give me a holler.

if you have over 100,000 miles on that tranny it would be good to replace your through out clutch, pressure, pilot. i thought i had a problem like that but it turned out to be my diff on my dx tranny, so i ended up finding and si tranny and put that in and the noise was gone when we opend up the dx the diff was trashed.
