What oil filter is the best?
I've been using Mobil 1 Synthetic and don't want to change the oil just to change the filter or go through the hassle of changing just the oil filter. Does anyone recommend any particular brands? Is it better to pick up some OEM filters at the dealership? FRAM? I know the general rule of thumb is that a heavier filter is better/longer lasting, but besides that are there any really badass filters?
the weight of the filter have NOTHING to do with how well it filter
well, consider this, both of the shell are the same weight/mass, if brand a uses 1 lb of cardbox like paper and brand b uses 1/2 lb of synthenic fiber element, brand a might weight more but do you know for sure it will filter better without knowing the element and construction of the filter?
if you are getting mix up about the concept of using oversized filter with weight? because it's two different things
stick with OEM, fram is garbage
are you saying you want to do oil change but skipping the oil filter changing part?

Go to the dealer and ask for an s2000 filter. It's the same size as the older "big" filters and it has a much better construction than the new ones that honda is selling.

This is correct. The S2000 filter is made in Japan, while the other OEM filter is smaller and it's the same filter that is used for the civic, prelude, etc. From what I have read, the new OEM Honda filters are made by Fram in Canada.
In short, stick with OEM made i Japan S2000 filter. Costs around 8 dollars.

i like H&K's oil filters. They make great filters, I don't think there's any argument there. They also make it very convenient by welding a 1 inch nut to the end of the filter, making it very easy to loosen.
i think schmitey was talking about the K&N oil filter, not the H&K? but i may be making an incorrect assumption here.
first off, i think everyone here already knows that fram makes garbage these days. in my experience, it will take at least 4000 miles with a K&N oil filter on my 93' civic to make my oil look like 2500 miles on a Fram filter. Not too sure about the Honda filters, I've never used them myself. like schmitey mentioned, they have a convenient 1" nut on the end so it's easy to get off. they cost $10 at kragens. according to the K&N oil filter box, these filters not only do a better job of trapping junk, but also improve the flow rate. thats only what the box says.. who knows. i've been using K&N for two years, and i wouldnt ever go back to those silly orange filters with the "SureGrip", even if it costs me $6.50 more.

yeah ok i'm a dumbass, was in a hurry...
umm...parts america sells them for around $10 i think it was
I've heard if you buy in bulk online they're really cheap, supposedly stops more dirt than any other filter.
I've worked at a parts store before, and I can tell you with all certainty that Fram is COMPLETE AND UTTER CRAP!!! I've seen so many filters come back that are missing the little blowback ball bearing. It's just gone...sucked into the engine. So much for trapping particles! And that sure grip thing just makes a mess after it melts around your exhaust (on my old eclipse when I was still a dumbass).

lmao.. im still using that on my mom's minvan hahahah. anyone have ideas for an economy filter that works well? i hear that even penzoil and motorcraft make better filters than fram. (but i guess that isnt saying much) anyone who's used oil filters for under $4 before?
edit: i guess i oculd go to the dealership for my mom's sienna, but it saves some hassle to get a store brand. thanks

Guess what... the Pennzoil filters are really frams.

I personally preffer K&N as an everyday filter, but theres also some good performance filters out there like the JDM HAMP one. That one is sized a little smaller to boost oil pressure i think ..
Remember, a bigger can doesn't automatically mean there's more area of filter media inside. Pressure drop thru the filter isn't controlled by the size of the can either.
I've always heard the Purolator PureOne line is really good. PL-14459 for the former bigger size, maybe it doesn't fit some newer engines?? I've occasionally seen them on sale for under $5, then I grab a bunch.
Mobil-1 M1-104 is the bigger size, they always cost about $10. They're good too, but probably not better than PureOne.
You used to be able to get Honda filters either made by Filtech (USA) or Fram (Canada). Since Honda switched to the smaller size, I haven't seen Filtech. (Anybody??)
Honda 15400-P0H-305 = US Filtech, no longer available
Honda 15400-PT7-005 = Canada Fram, no longer available
Honda 15400-PCX-004 = Japan S2000 filter
BTW, Honda's smaller filters are now being labeled as 'Honeywell', since Honeywell owns Fram. But I'm not sure whether Fram/Honeywell uses the cardboard end-caps & otherwise cheap construction when they're making filters for Honda? Until someone cuts one apart, I guess it's possible they make Honda filters better than the ones under their own label??
Honda 15400-PLM-A02 = Honeywell, new smaller size

I've got a stash of the Honeywell 15400 PLM-A02 filters (the new smaller ones), they cost roughly $5 each from a place like:

Is it the best filter out there? I doubt it, but for $5 it’s a good deal, better than paying $3.17 for a Fram filter at Wal-Mart (I’m assuming that this filter is better constructed than the normal Fram). If the Honda dealer uses it, I’m assuming it must have some merits.
I say that I have a stash of them, but I haven’t actually put one on my car yet. I bought them maybe 2 months ago, right after my last oil change, I haven’t changed the oil since then. A $3 Fram filter from Wal-Mart is currently on my car.
