limitations of the ZC dohc motor?
hey guys, i have a JDM EF Civic that has the dohc ZC motor.
i was wondering if the car is worth modding.
i was planning 2" full-exhaust system, panel filter & extractors. would it be worth the money?
btw, i'm in Australia.
thanks.

Of course. Take advantage of what you have. Most people will tell you that the best way to go and the one you'll get most power out of is turbo, which is true. If your engine has a lot of miles you might consider a rebuilt with some internals done to run more reliably.
You can go na, but its gonna take more money and time.

If it is. I dont know about the US situtation of Dohc ZC.
In Europe the D16A9 is very potential engine. And with minor tune up, B16 killer. Trust me. I think the engines does have some diffrence. If ZC is so underestimated engine in there.

i'm not a great fan of turbo'ing Hondas.
i'd rather do mild mods, nothing to crazy.
the car has only 56,XXXkms so around 40k or so miles, so a rebuild is not an option.
what i'm trying to say is that i wanted the SIR B16A but i couldn't find one so i settled with the ZC, so i was wondering if its possible to tune the ZC (not too heticly) to performance as well as the B16.

I had a b16. All motor is not all that great with them. If you are trying to beat b16's then I would suggest a little headwork. I would get i/h/e. some stage 3 cams im, and tb. That should be more than enough i think.
2 days ago i did the first official race with my DOHC ZC swap in my CRX against a b16 crx...no doubt in my head his was ALOT heavier than mine (full body kit, a wooden interior with a pair of 12" subs and god know what else" but i took him off the line and had at least 1/2 a car on him till 3rd gear-ish. At the next stop light he asked what i had and when i said ZC he said i'm a liar and a ZC couldn't beat a b16 with i/h/e well my stock intake, stock header, stock exhaust DOHC ZC sure did prove me right
So once again i stand by what alot of people say...for the $3000 you will spend on putting in a b16, you can put in a DOHC ZC and have $2000 to spend on performance mods making it faster than the b series hype

u need turbo.....if u can go 2 1/4 inch exaust with 4.1 headers and get pm7 ecu with good cold air intake just to get started and ur car should beat the gsr stock......i have the dohc swap with si tranny in a 89 civic lx and i love it.
interesting.. what is this i/h/e?
i=?? h=headers? e=exhaust? extractors?
a friend of mine has an EK1 (Civic GLi), it has the D16Y1 , performance seems similiar.
i want to tare him apart with no vtec, and hopefully come close to my other mate that has an EK4
possible without turbo?

i/h/e = intake/header/exhaust
Yes it is possible to do it all motor. With cams, mild headwork, i/h/e you should have no problem taking your friend and many other cars out there.

you won't be much slower than a b16 in stock form, as the b16 is a heavier car for other reasons than just the engine (brakes, interior etc.)
i/h/e and a little headwork/cams will make you quicker

If you can...I would mod it with a B motor(understand they are not easily found for you). Its a night and day difference. I have had both and would choose the B over the ZC anyday. The ZC is still a fun motor though. An I/H/E will yield you some good gains and allow you to enjoy it a little more.

I too have had both an n/a zc and an n/a b16a and would agree with gearspeed.

You are talking about the del sol and 99-2000 civic si I believe. These cars are heavier. However, zc vs. b16a in the same car in stock form would result in the b16a winning out over the zc.

what would you guys recommend for i/h/e?
for the exhaust, it's damn hard to find straight bolt on's for the EF, well i found a Remeus axle-back.. AUS$900.. i got a quote for AUS$500 for a custom cat-back system, 2" piping with 3" tip.

2.25" exhaust... the muffler is cakewalk after that. I run a Flowmaster 70 series exhaust in my '91 Sedan and it sounds great. Transverse mounted like it was from the factory. Comes out to two 2" tips out the back like the stock EX trim, just minus the chrome trim and all.

i was talking about the b16 equipped mk2 crx (the vt/sir) and the d16a9 equipped mk2 crx (the 1.6i-16/si)
these aren't the same car

wow, that ZC is pretty impressive for all motor and the mods that he's done to it.
i can't seem to find an exhaust that i can bolt on to my EF without breaking my bank.. what are some prices you guys payed for?

Aftermarket exhausts are expensive. I would just buy a muffler and resonator and have some custom piping made. This is the cheapest method.
