Do I have to turn the bolt clockwise or counterclockwise to remove the pulley.
I’m changing the timing-belt (and the pulley) and I know that to set the engine to TDC I have to turn counterclockwise,
but do I have to turn the bolt clockwise to remove it?

i think you have to turn it counterclock wise to take off the bolt.

Are you sure? Have you done it?
The reason I’m asking is because that’s what I though, too, but when I tried to take it off, it doesn’t even move.
I also talked to this one kid who claimed he works on cars, and he set it’s reverse for crank pulleys.

 

i havent done it myself but i read other treads about this b4..the pully bolt is really tuff, even usin the clutch to hold it might not even help..if you have a impact gun then it will be easier..but if its not counterclock then its clockwise

 

i couldn't do it. i broke two craftman socket extenders.

Yah, I’m pretty sure of that’ too, ha ha ha.

I just sprayed some stuff to loosen the bolt and will try again.
I do have an impact wrench, but it’s only around 250fpt.
I’ll go try it right now.

 

Just tried and no luck
Tried it both ways. I don’t want to keep doing it without knowing the right direction, because if I’m going the wrong way, I’ll just tighten it even more.

 

The crank pulley bolt is standard threaded (i.e., counter-clockwise to loosen). A 250 ft. lbs impact gun is most likely not going to be able to remove it.

@ least 500lb reverse impact gun on 90psi or 1/2" drive ratchet with a 3-4ft breaker bar.

 

drive to any shot and have them loosen it for with the air gun...and then lube it with anti seize....then tight it back...take it home and do it yourself when you are ready to change

My neighbor’s hobby is working on cars’ so he has all the air tools and what not, but since it’s Easter, he’s out celebrating somewhere.
I’ll ask him if he wants to help me tomorrow.

 

I have a special breaker bar for the crank pulley...my 4 foot jack handle slid over my 18" 1/2" drive breaker bar! but Im assuming the engine is still in the car and no more than 1 1/2' off the ground? if so the bigger breaker bar want work. Ive only taken them off on the stand. good luck

 

take off your flywheel cover underneath the engine...

cram a screwdriver in between the teeth...

put 19mm 1/2" drive socket on a breaker bar and turn counter clockwise...


or you could do it with an impact wrench...
(please don't do the screwdriver stunt)

 

okay ive replaced 3 timing belts on my own engines and plenty more with friends the most recent way ive done it was to take off the starter and remove one of the actual 10mm pressureplate to flywheel bolts and shuved a screw driver all the way thru until it touched the block this gave me enough hold still to put a 17mm or 11/16th socket (6point not 12) (i believe it is instead of a 19mm...) on a socet wreck with 3 foot of extension and a breaker bar 4 foot long... it takes a whole lot of pressure to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt but its standard threaded as earlier stated... my friends do it with air guns i myself preferr doing it the way i just explained... just make sure to torque the bolt back on with as much pressure as possible i think its supposed to be 132ft pounds but i cant remimber

 

I gave up on it for today.
Hopefully my neighbor will be nice and sober tomorrow, so I’ll ask him If I cam borrow his tools.

My impact wrench… 250-275fpt (electric) Good enough for everything except underdrive pulley bolts.
My neighbors impact wrench… 500-600fpt (air)

 

hehe i made a breaker bar from my socket wrench and a five foot pipe. Works a 100% better then my air tools.

 

i wouldnt use anything else but an impact gun to take this bolts off. think about it its your crank. if that bolt comes off, your fuckec

 

yea i mean putting it on with a impact gun would be okay i just wouldnt use one to take it off with. my friends (a 94 dx) crank pulley fell off once. the only thing it was running was the altenator but he made it home without the timing belt falling off. still its not a good experience im sure... oh and that same friend used an impact gun to take off and replace his bolt already... and used the gun to take his off again it broke the bolt which the fact he replaced the bolt with another one from another civic could be why it fell out and the crankpulley came off

 

To crank the motor to TDC, you turn it counterclockwise...

To loosen the crank pulley, you turn the bolt counterclockwise...

If your friend used an impact wrench to put the bolt on, that could explain why his pulley fell off. You put bolts on with a torque wrench, to their rated spec - overtightening causes metal fatigue.

If your friend wasn't the original owner of the car, you never know what the previous owners did to it. It's possible the crank bolt had been abused before your friend touched it.

Keep in mind these old(er) Honda engines turn the reverse of virtually every other engine in the world. What's true for engines that spin in the opposite direction isn't necessarily true for ours.

According to my Helms manual you remove the bolt using a counter-clockwise motion. Assuming the engine in your car wasn't made in the past 3-4 years (Honda's started making engines that rotate in the same direction as everyone else) yours should be the same.

Personally, I'd get an impact wrench or visit a shop with one. The tool that was linked is even useful for those instances as it focuses all the energy onto turning that damn bolt (instead of some of it trying to turn the crank). If you use a breaker bar, be careful - I've snapped my fair share of bolts with breaker bars.
