boosted D16Y8 Ninja's .... whats your total timing at ??
y8's have base timing of 12deg where as z6's have 16deg base
i was just wondering what psi everyone is at and what timing you guys are running.
also what kind of fuel management you guys are using ?? FMU ?? uber ?? Hondata ?? etc..

actually i read that whole thread and then some
most of the thread was all based on z6 motors
there was only a fwe rare y8's thats why i started this thread title as "d16y8" and not d series in general.
if anything im sorry for making a duplicate thread i geuss

My thoughts exactly. I would tune for more like ~18-20

what i would really like to know is if anyone has taken their stock non built turbo y8 to the dyno and tuned the ignition timing. This is what needs to be done to find out around where it needs to be. I suspect that there is a big timing difference between what the y8 and z6 motors need.

No, that's pump gas. It's just a street tune I threw together... uber rich and I added timing till it started to feel ok... I know you're gonna say I'm crazy, but beleive me i'm not retarded.
The car at 15psi was making pretty much zero power at 24*. It felt like a dog, almost slower than my old setup (stock, 10ish psi). The low end also felt like ****. I added 3* to the whole map, and the entire motor felt better. I then added two more. Much better. It has to have somthing to do with the fact that the vitara's sit 2mm down in the bore... and that the compression is like 7.8:1 -- they need it. I'm pretty sure timing isn't at an unsafe level... This is the first setting that started to make real (decent) power. There's still a lot more in leaning it out, but my local dyno (bristol) is in the process of moving. Anyways, I have a feeling I could still go another 4 degrees (i.e.33) before **** actually started breaking.

yea i guess that makes sense that you'd have to add so much timing with those vitaras. Either that or maybe your base timing is off at the distributor, but what you say sounds about right since the cr is so low.

would an egt gauge work ??

i don't have much experience with egt's so i don't know exactly how to tune it with that. I do know if is much better on the dyno though.

The fact that they sit 2mm down in the bore makes sense now.

did you tune that on the dyno hella or do you just have a standard ignition retard for now?

i started tuning on the dyno but never finished due to my sudden paid vacation to the middle east .
this was at 13 lbs and 7200 redline . made 263 with a bad ignition hiccup. not too shabby . i might take a degree or 2 more when i run 25 lbs

running overly rich is not the way to tune a "safe" turbo setup. Sure, it helps reduce detonation, but it also makes horrible fuel mileage, and can wash your cylinder walls clean of oil and in the end mean the death of your engine.
IMO, unless you have atleast a wideband, there is no sense in even trying to "tune" your engine.

wow i really need to advance my timing more. I am running only 16* at 10psi
. Did you take it to the dyno and find that 19* was the best place for it or was this just a general step retard? Was 19* right before the point where it would start pinging or did you find that point and back it off a few degrees?
