Default Prelude without Power Steering

As far as i know, power steering was standard on all preludes, and since i cant seem to find a non-ps rack on any honda part sites, i assume this is correct.

So, in order to get rid of ps i have thought of two ideas:

1) fitting an a/c compressor clutch to the ps pulley....i almost got it to work, just need a shop to custom make a splined shaft and its done.....that way you can have an on/off switch for power steering which would be very nice.....

2) taking the pump out and setting up a breather system with the lines, that way the fluid is gone and its not that hard to turn it, but from what i gathered, i wasnt able to get a definitive answer on how hard it is to turn prelude's piggy *** with this setup....

anyone have some insight on that?

I just have my lines looped and it's NO problem when you're moving above 5 mph, but turning at a standstill is a 2-handed job.

do you think there is any advantage to doing a whole breather setup or you think looping the lines is enough?

im curious what exactly is needed for looping the lines?

where do you loop them at?

does the fluid have to be flowing, or just need to be present to keep the rack lubed/cooled?

ive been wanting to do this lately but have been a little set back by the thought of burning up the steering rack.

any suggestions for doing this?

edit: ive been running with no ps belt on for almost 7 months now so im cpletely used to turning the car with no ps. i jsut want to drop some weight and clean up the engine bay more

Padawan I believe made the kits for integra/civic/del sol that put a breather inline with the looped lines, and from what I read and saw with the expanded pics of a rack, the fluid doesn't lube it at all. The teeth that need lubing are already pre-greased

At least thats the way I took it.

But I also wanna do this on my car, so anymore insight would be awesome, since I IM'ed him and never really saw much interest for a prelude kit

im gonna figure out what his kits did, because they looked more advanced than just a breather....

i will try to find out, then i will probably start making kits for preludes if enough people want one.....

I tried disabling the power steering on my SH several ways over a span of about 2 weeks - with the belt removed, looping the rack, looping the rack with a breather, and leaving the rack completely open. Every one of them was miserable. **shrug**

The car was driveable, but it simply wasn't fun anymore - or safe, in my opinion. Accident avoidance ability at parking-lot speeds was vastly reduced. And it was very hard to drive smoothly out of corners since the wheel recentered itself so violently.

Another negative - shuffle steering becomes next to impossible (unless you're considerably stronger than I am, but I don't consider myself a weakling). You need the leverage of pulling the entire wheel across your body - and in an airbag equipped car, that's hardly the wisest style of driving.

If anyone is interested in all the parts & fittings I used, send me an e-mail - I've still got it all.

I don't have PS on my lude, I just took the belt off...I have a ps leak, and I didn't really care for fixing it, I just drained all the fluid and left all the **** in there...it's a bitch to turn when you're stopped, but when moving, it's pretty easy

I took the pump and all hardware for PS off. I then drained all but about 10% of the fluid in the rack, then looped the 2 lines on the rack together. Wanted to leave a little in just for some lube. I capped all other ps line outlets that are at were the rack meets the pinion.

The other option is to have a custom made rack with out all the PS stuff (it would be much lighter), but they cost about $600.

I have info on a place that will do it, but it is at home, and I'm at work. I will post the info on here later tonight if I get a chance to.
