Default still cant figure out the shifter wiggle?

still having the problem when i have the car in first gear, i can still wiggle the shifter from side to side as if i'm still in neutral. It stays in gear and everything but just moves like crazy. I went under and checked bushings and whatnot, seem to be fine. Maybe i'm missing something, can anyone show me a pic of the shift linkages from the underside of the car, mainly at the shifter and then at the tranny? My setup is in my sig so something compatable to that. There has to be a part or something i'm missing, so i just need to compare. thanks

Jack up the car, and tighten all the bolts that are connected to the shift linkage.

If everything else is tight and you still have problems check the shift linkage joint that is up by the tranny. I had excessive movement in my linkage and it ended up that the plastic bushings in the front joint were shot.

thats the point where a bolt goes throught the shift linkage and then through a small rod coming out of the tranny right? if so i do have some movement there. I have a bolt going through with a nut on the topside. I tightened this down as much as i could but still have a little bit of play. what are all the parts involved with this joint?

No i meant just behind where is connects at the tranny. There is a flexible joint there. Look at it and you will see what I meant. There is plastic bushing in the joint and mine are worn out causing the shifter to have a lot of play left to right.

On number 13 towards the front near the tranny

yea thats the part i'm talkin about too. At the end where that small pin is shown next to #28 at the end of #13. That joint right there at the tranny is definitely loose. I took that apart and there is only a threaded nut acting as the pin and a nut on top to hold it in. I'm not sure what plastic bushing you are talking about?

I am not talking where the pin goes. Right before the pin on the shifter side there is a large joint like a flex joint on a ratchet socket. It flexs in two different directions There is rivets holding it together with plastic bushings on the inside. See if that joint is shot?

bingo. sounds like the PO replaced the "bitch pin" with a bolt and nut. doing so makes your shfter feel really loose and shitty. go pick a new one up and your shifter will feel 100000000x better

Yes... you definately need a new bitch pin... without it your shifter will feel like poo poo...

I want to hear some other theories about this besides the bitch pin though... I replaced mine a little while ago because my shifter was loose and it still has quite a bit of movement...

I bet you don't have a "bitch pin" installed........

my linkage is connected by a bolt and nut to the tranny..........and it shakes like its outta gear when its in gear...

sounds like this "bitch pin" is the problem. Anyone have a pic of what its supposed to look like? Also if anyone would bother taking the time, i would still like to see actual pictures of underneath the car at the shifter and tranny just so i can compare?

or maybe the joint collar on the shifter itself, maybe the rubber o rings that are on it are worn out.

I just replaced my bitch pin again this last weekend when I replaced the oil seal and dust boot...

It was sooo easy to replace with a punch. I went out and sprung the $5 for a 5/16" non-tappered roll pin punch, and it came right out, like butter!

I bought a new one from Honda as well as the seal and boot, replaced them all and it made a HUGE difference!

The old pin didn't look bad but I figured I might as well replace it because new ones are only a buck or two anyways... that buck or two really does a lot to the feel of your car!

My shifter is even tighter now than it was before. I even have a Skunk2 shift **** which increases the play because of its weight.

yeah the shifter does sorta move and vibrate with the throttle play and RPM, and the ability to wiggle it lightly while in gear is normal. i have a short shifter, and when in first, i can push it a tad to the right, and in third a tad to the left, and its the same location. So if its a wiggle you can do yourself, but you can still feel it firm where it wont do it anymore, thats ok, otherwise it probably is the bitch pin.

I have that same problem with my 96 civic with GSR swap. I didnt use the bitch pin either so that seems to be the common problem between people with wobbly shifter.

I'm gonna pick one up tomorrow since I have nothing else to do... I'm also replacing my shifter and bushings, hopefully that'll make a difference.

bump had this exact problem i ordered a B&M short throw shifter which came with nice new o-rings (#24 on the diagram) installed that and it became so much more stiffer, those stock o-rings wear out very easily from people leaning on the shifter while driving, plus they are just rubber
