Performance for my D16Z6
Hey there,
in short:
I have 95' Civic EX with stock D16Z6 in it and, as many of you, I want more HP in my car. Here is my oppinion about it:
- Don't wanna do engine swap due to the price, the unceartanty, and the amount of work needed;
- My engine is in perfect condition, like it just came out new, has about 100K mile on it;
- Don't wanna spend tons of money on it; How much do I wanna spend - 5 bucks for example, you get the idea
- Don't wanna have hard time with installing new components;
- The car is my daily driver;
- Has to have a way to pass emissions test;
So, the main idea is that whatever I do, it has to be NOT expensive !!! (like no more than $2500)
---------------------------------
The options that I got from what I red so far are:
1. Supercharge it with Jackson Racing Supercharger; cost - about $2000
- FOR: reliable; has warranty; will give about 160 HP (142 WHP); will pass emissions; can be upgraded with Hondata ECU for up to 200WHP/160lb (cost: $1300); will give instant power
- AGAINST: got to use only high octane fuel; HP is not that much different of my stock of 125HP (about 35HP) without Hondata ECU; expensive with Hondata
2. Turbo it; cost - in $2000-$2500 range
- FOR: lots of HP (about 186WHP/170lb with intercooler and 440cc injectors, see http://www.turboD16.com, from lower stage turbos); easy to install, no belts needed; can be driven with regular fuel; WILL smoke any Civic with engine swap only for the same money
- AGAINST: may not be so cheap; may not have a way to pass emissions; got to wait until the turbo kicks in at higher RPM
3. Header, Exhoust, Intake (intercooler): cost - about $1000
- FOR: .. am not sure, maybe for that 25HP that it will eventually gain; easy to install; cheaper that 1. and 2.
- AGAINST: low HP, may not be worthed the money
4. Engine swap - not really ...
-------------------------------------------
So tell me what do you guys think ?

.. there is a GReddy Turbo kit for about $1500 .. how about that one?

**** just spray it you could get a nitrous kit for like around 300 spray a 50 shot and u'll be making a lot more power than the supercharger u'll waste regular gas pass emission you only go fast when you want 2
spray will add up... for one thing you should run high octane in a turbo car...two you dont run an intercooler unless your car is turbo'd (maybe youre thinking of cold air intake).. three you will most likely not gain 25 hp from a header, exhaust and intake more than likely you will get 10-15 hp.. dont waste your money on the spray or the I/H/E my opinion would be to go turbo but i would give it a toss up between supercharger and turbo if you chose an adequate turbo for your goals u would not have to wait till higher rpm for boost...in the FI forum you can see a thread about sc vs turbo my advice to you would be to look into a greddy turbo kit. good luck...and remember you can only have two (fast, reliable, cheap)
PS. My custom turbo kit was a little more than 2500 and that includes hondata.

That or a greddy kit is what I'd recommend.

i have a 95 eg with a d16z6 with the greddy turbo kit, i have nothing but good things to say about it, it comes with everything u need to get started, i would recommend getting the intercooler and injectors to go along with it. the kit is about 1300-1400 online, 600 for the intercooler, injectors can range for what u want, the rc440's are good. im running 9psi on stock internals and ive heard of people going higher. the turbo kit was the first thing i bought, it would be a waste to buy headers, intake, and other components if you plan on going forced induction. as for the lag i think from 1000-2500 is worth having boost from 2500-7500+. i used aim and yahoo messenger hybrdthry911 on both if you need more info let me know.

and another thing, i/h/e will not cost 1000 unless you plan on getting the most expensive of each product...and ebay intake with k&n filter is just as good as any 300 intake, and there are many header options avalible for good prices as well as exhaust...but i/h/e is always a good choice....i would recommend going turbo

I like my jrsc,
where did you get the idea that you can run a 180whp dseries turbo kit on 87octane???
someones been smokin somethin they shouldnt be
boost is boost is boost.
whether it's coming out of a sc or turbo,
the turbo might be alil cooler due to the intercooler, but you're still going to have to fight detonation.

seems like the only n00b that knows what he's talking about
we need more of these ppl.
yea dude, your only gonna have serious lag if you get a GIGANTIC turbo...which would probably blow your stock motor anyway...
you can get a small custom kit for way under $1k too..
egizzle6 (Henry) is building me a kit for only around $600.
comes with the greddy blue box,
oil lines
oil pressure sensor adapter
an alread taped oil pan
an IHI rhb5
HF manifold w/ welded turbo flange
side mount intercooler
BOV and all piping
seems good enough..you can just upgrade the turbo itself later

Hey thanks for the fast reply,
got some good feedback, as well as some off topic, but that's OK.
I never mentioned NOS in my list, but thanks anyway. As it turns out, I'll probably go with that GReddy turbo kit. So, tell me what do you think about it specificly! Here's what I found:
http://www.city-speed.com -> they sell it for $1400, that's the cheapest I saw
http://www.stealthmodeperformance.com -> they got an intercooler for $200 shipped
-> for pipes and stuff - have no idea yet
-> for injectors - no idea either (looking for about 440's)
However, is says that some of the GReddy kits are CARB approved, but I couldn't find more info on that issue...
Is it possible to adjust how much psi you run through that turbo? If so, how do you do that, how much it comes set on, and what's the max psi on it? If not, do I have to change the turbo for higher psi in the future?
And what about the quality of the part? .. reliable?
Finally, if I just bolt that one on, how much HP will my car become (approximately, I have no idea on how much psi it runs)
Thanks to (hybrdthry911) for all info, and to (HatchEh2) - I'll try to talk to that guy who is building one for you.

the greddy kits are supposed to add like 56% or so horsepower.. Im not too sure how much your car has, but 56% is the round about gain you should get. As for changing the boost.. I know you can do that with Hondata. you have a high and low boost switch, so you can switch it to whichever one you desire at the time. the CARB approved is a california thing. For things to be smog legal in cali they have to be carb legal, so that would be one of the legal turbochargers in california. I really hope I helped.
turbo no doubt, the greddy is nice, as said the header/cai/exahust will only get you at most 20 hp and thats stretching it. My d16z6 has Skunk 2 cam gears,AEM CAI, Chikara header,magnaflow muffler with 2.25 in piping no cat,chiped p28 ecu,AEM fuel rail and bigger injectors,headwork,new rods and pistons and an Apexi VAFC an di only put down aroun 160hp.
I would definately go turbo if I were you...
I started out I/H/E, then wanted some more... contemplated a N20 set up... then decided to go turbo and I've never looked back!
The only thing is... with turbo you might have some emissions problems. I guess if you get the Greddy kit you should pass but for the amount of money that the Greddy kit costs you could build a much more efficient and more powerful custom setup. With the Greddy kit you are going to spend 1300 for 5.5psi... you will want to turn up the boost within a week
I don't know much abour emissions requirements where you live but I'm guessing that most people with custom kits aren't going to pass.
If you are really concerned about emissions I would just get a basic Greddy kit and leave it alone... but how much fun is that?

well think of it this way,once your car is 15 years old you no longer have to pass emissions, so you could always get the greddy kit and put the boost down the the stock pressure when you go to the ref station, then turn it back up and leave it
its only 15 over there? in texas Im pretty sure its 25
how gay.
edit: yep.. just checked from 2year to 24 year old cars have to get it tested every year.... if it was 15 Id only have 2 more years to go
I HATE TEXAS!

Oo yeah, drop it. i just checked ur car domain.. yeah.
and you have to know. anytime u wanna do something w/ the engine, there is ALWAYS a chance that u wont pass smog. its like the DISADVANTAGE of upgrading stuff in ur car. but hey, i mean i just smog'd my car lik ea few months ago, i have another 2 years to smog it.
or or or..
go to them asian ones, pay a lil more and they will pass u.

do you know what hondata is man? Hondata does not control boost at all. Hondata controls fuel and timing. and those fuel/timing maps need to be tuned its not just a plug and go kind of thing..
as for the original poster i think the greddy kit will be great for you.. the city-speed deal sounds great and look into a johnnyracecar.com intercooler they are pretty nice. and they dont come with a bov do they? so get one of those too they are cheap. run that setup for a while then you can get a boost controller and uberdata(free)/hondata(not free haha) and boost it up a little more. definately opt for a brand new kit though cuz most people buying greddy kits generally dont know what they are doing so there is no telling what youll get.

i know what it is, but if you add the boost option, sorry I didnt say that before, theres a way to have a low boost and high boost. thats what someone told me.

well the boost option just unlocks the boost "vacuum" columns, the way to run high/low boost would be to tune it for high boost and then you are set for any amount of boost under that level...but if you like wanna change to higher octane and up the boost..which is unlikely in this case..you would need a seperate map for that..as far as i know you cant just "switch" you would have to swap out chips..which really is no big deal at all

same exact thing here.
i/h/e was 189+275+410, so 874.
skunk2 cam and camgear i never used cost 510, so thats like ~1400.
that would have given me around 130-135whp and is the same price as the base greddy kit which i would imagine to be ~150-160whp. this is all not to mention i had a bad *** nitrous kit that i never hooked up that ran me 500 bucks.
my turbo setup had cost me right around 2200, and would have let me push my car to the stock block limits 250+whp if i chose to.
im currently trying to figure out how to get passed the inspection here in ny with a turbo setup, so i can understand you being aprehensive toward boost, especially a home made kit. honestly though, if going boost the only 2 ways to go in my opinion are to either 1- buy a complete used kit(like greddy or rev hard, drag....blablabla) or 2- piece together your own setup( my current one will be lovefab shorty, tial wg, greddy bov, bosch injectors, drag i/c, uberdata, blablabla..but you can do fine with something like a 14b with hf manifold and some dsm 450cc injectors
