Default Car won't start and main relay clicks

I have already done a search on this and no one seems to have the same kind of problem i am running into...

So one day i go to my local firestone to check the pricing on an alignment and i come back to my car less then 5 min later and i go to crank on my car to start and it just clicks doesnt even try to crank/turn over, and usually its just that the battery cables to to be wiggled did that serveral times and still no luck. While doing this i notices my three electronic Greddy gauges are freacking out needles moving like crazy. Then i am thinking there is a short in my car's wiring. So i disconnect the gauges and all and try it again same just one click, but this time when i return the key to the on position i hear this random clicking fast and slow from under the dash. I trace it to being the main relay under the passenger dash behind the glove box. My Service manuel says the this is the PGM-FI / ECM relay. After walking across the street to pepboys running into one of my friends that work there we went back to my car and tried jump starting it and it started fine. The thing is the battery is about a year old (Its an Optima yellow top), and my gauges and the clicking noise was never a problem when the battery is dead. Also the volt meter on my turbo timer showed 8.6 volts and the next minute it shows 12.6 volts and then i try to crank and the volts go back to 8.6 ish. So i get the car back home and i bought a new relay the next day threw that in and still nothing. The crazy clicking went away. When i get some extra time i am gonna try to get my battery and alternator tested, but in the mean time does anyone have any suggestions?

Also i dont think i would be my starter but i maybe wrong. The reason i am not thinking its the starter is because a bad starter shouldnt make my gauge needles bounce all over the place and make the main relay click like crazy, but correct me if i am wrong

Sounds to me like your battery is dead. I know they are supposed to be good batteries but here in the air force we use those things for everything and they SUCK... But the clicking is your starter and it's not getting enough power to start the engine...

That's why when your friend jumped you it started... Get another battery and you should be fine... GL
