For those who clean their track rims, I got a question.
Yeah I know most people don't clean the nearly impossible race pad dust off, but the few that do, what do you use to get them clean?
Here's what I'm up against.

thanks!

I haven't yet cleaned my track rims, but for the wheels on my Z (which used to get filthy with brake dust) I used Eagle One wheel cleaner. I'd spray the wheel w/ the hose to knock the loose dust off, then apply the eagle one, let it sit for like 2-ish minutes, then take a soapy sponge to it and scrub. Seemed to work very well. I always used a different soap bucket and sponge than I used to wash the car so that I didn't get any of the wheel cleaner or brake dust on the paint. HTH

I'll have to try that, I figured while I'm stuck in the house with 20 inch of snow I'd try to clean the rims... But I guess it will have to wait til autozone opens on Monday
That dust is nothing. The corrotive brake dust from my spec B's caused me to have to completely strip the paint off mine and repaint them. I'm in the process of doing them now. Even aircraft remover is having a hard time getting some of it off.
That's Dave Bowlin dust, you got a better chance of getting the clap from a nun than getting that stuff off, Rob

I used to clean my rims(racing sparco) after every track event until one day I went in the rain and the dust from my brake pads(hawk blue) baked on the wheels when I hit a puddle. If this is the kind of dust you have there is nothing that will take it off except for scraping it off with a putty knife. If it is normal non-baked on brake dust you should be able to get it off with any strong wheels cleaner. Armour all wheel cleaner is one of the toughest. They actually changed the formula a couple of years ago because the previous formula was so strong that when you sprayed it on a hot wheel it became corrosive. Before you start cleaning make sure you clean a cool wheel, which should be fine since they are off your car now.

Since I don't know what kinda pads caused the dust, i thought i would try household cleaners, but they only took off a light layer ...
If it is hawk pads, would anything work other then messing up the finish on the rims?

From what I have seen on my own track wheels and friends who used Hawk Blue, nothing takes it off if the brake dust was baked on. If you never used the wheels in the rain and used Hawk blue then you can get the dust off with any wheels cleaner and a stiff brush. I used to use just use soap and water and sometime used simple green. I wish somebody told me about the bake issue before I used the pads on a wet track. Hawk HP Plus and similar come off very easy regardless if you drove through water or not. If I have some time tomorrow I will take a pic of Hawk Blue dust that I could not take off with anything you buy off the shelf. I even used the acid stuff that detailers use as a last resort and that did not work either.

LOL!
For one, Opie, my OEM wheels had Hawk Blue Brake dust, which is notorious for being a pain. Those Kosei's are Cobalt Brake dust, should get off no problem.

I've tried this and it works well. FWIW, my wheels are BBS, shot-peened, painted silver. Baked-on dust won't come off completely, but there is a visible difference before and after using this. Not much rubbing needed, either.

Hmm. Too late for my rims, then. I really haven't seen any difference with the paint luster, tho. Got the dust off, didn't dull the paint underneath.

I used Castrol Super Clean but it didn't work either. Doesn't Naval Jelly remove the paint as well? I recall it being used as a surface prep to remove rust from steel so that you can paint it?

SprayNine household cleaner works pretty well for getting most dust off... what that doesn't get off with a little elbow grease, wadding polish usually will. Smells like petroleum distillates, I think mine was the NEVR DULL brand.

Yes it will etch the wheels.
I went through 3 cans of Aircraft stripper trying to strip the paint off my kosei's - the powdercoat is pretty tough and some of the caked on brake dust didnt budge.

For cobalt dust, car soap and a softer scrub brush worked fine with a bit of elbow grease..
for the hawk dust, try a product they make called Enamal Cleaner.. it strips down to the clearcoat and doesn't damage the paint.. Carried by most paint shops..
