I have a 96 hatch with a all motor with only about 6000 miles on it. As i was pulling onto the highway i had scented something that smelled like a burnt belt and thought it was only the old beat truck in front of me. The trucker pulled into one of the streets and the scent went away. So I figured it was the trucker and kept driving. I came to a redlight. As i was taking off from a red light when i got to about 3500 rpm in first gear and heard a big POW. After the sound my car just start boggling down until it could go anymore. Now I can't start it. It wants to start for a sec but then it dies right after. I thought it would be the timing belt but it wasn't. I checked the fuses under the hood and there all fine. The car wasn't running hot. Anyone know what is the problem or had a similar problem that would know something about this?

 

Timing is good... Going tow it home now... anyone?

 

check ur block for holes

 

check your coolant for oil in it from what you said i think it is time to pull the head at least if not the whole motor sorry
what motor is it

 

b18c1... no holes... ... i tried starting it... it stays on for a sec and dies out... i took out the spark plugs to check them and used a flashlight to look at pistons while i was at it, but came up with nothing... i might stop at autozone to get compression tester. anymore tips would be greatful.

Detenation, Burnt valves, Running to lean with timing way too advanced maybe? I'm going to place the problem in your head, typically, when you have burnt some valves and have a bit of blow by your car will run but feel like it wants to stall and sputter. Could be a hole in a piston as well, your really going to need to do that compression test.

1. Check your timing belt teeth and timing setting all the way around
2. Check your oil for contamination
3. Check your head at the gasket level for leaks
4. Check your spark plugs for excess WHITENESS and oil on the tips
5. Check your compression in each cylinder

When all of the is completed come back and tell us the was observed.

Also pull your dist. cap and see if the rotor came lose, orthe cap is bad, could have fired the wrong cylinder.

no, its trash.

the bare block and crank(hopefully) will be the only thing salvagable.
when you pull the head, you will notice that the pistons will not be in their proper positions and a rod or rods will be bent.

good luck on the rebuild.

1. Timing belt teeth are fine
2. Haven't checked it.
3. Slight amount of oil on the front left, but it looks like that oil has been there.
4. Spark plugs are light brown color and no oil on the tips.
5. See post above for results.

Engines don't just take a **** while your stopped at a light.

$4000 motor and only got to use it for only 5000 miles with a new oil change just a few a day ago. oh and all that tuning is now trash. What a hobby...

 

The bent rod theory sounds best, unfortunately.

I still think it is the valves. I had a similar experience happen to me 2 years ago in a B16 i had. The car leaned out without my knowing it, timing was a little too advanced, ended up burning a few valves. Car ran like ****, barely keeped idle, kepped sputtering and popping. This all happened after a big POP. Pull the head and do a water leak down on the head and jesus christ man, check your oil just for checking oil sake.

 

I did what I could before it got dark, but I'll get on the oil check tomorrow. But for the pulling head to do a leak down test, I won't be able to do it becuase I don't have the necessary tools and lack of funds to get tools at the time. If your wondering, all my tools are in my hometown and thats over 1000 miles away. I recently moved and funds are really tight. Also, timing is now set at zero.\

w3rd motors don't just pop on their own... I know from experience... so what exactly where you doing before the light?? g/l on finding out what the problem is, but until you can pull the head off there is really no telling...

well from this, its either a valve is not closing(bent) or your piston rings arent sealing so... deos your engine even turn over by you using a wrench on the bolt that holds the crank pulley on, take spark plugs out and turn over motor. if it turns over with little or no effort might be ok but if you cant something might be broken. DO THIS SLOWLY . Maybe you can turn it over, but in cyclinder 3 can you see the piston going up and down through the spark plug hole., use flash light, see if debri is in there. I assumeing that it deos turn over because you did a compression test. This only leaves one thing. VALVES.(i think)

 

I'm trying to bring this thread back from the dead. Sorry, haven't responded for a while. I finally had the time to drain the oil and tested turning the motor by hand. I don't have any coolant in the oil i drained out from the pan. I was able to turn the motor with the rachet easily. I have a some pictures of oil that seem to be leaking from the head gasket. There wasn't a puddle under the car since it been sitting there for over a month now. Is my bottom end okay for reuse? I want to pull my head off, but will i still be able to tell if my bottom end is trash without doing a leak down test? What are ways to make sure the bottom end is still reuseable once the head is off? I want to either just find a replacement head or just try to sell whatever i can and get a b16 just for me to get around. What do you guys suggest?

that oil on your block there looks like it's from a leaking cam seal. from the looks of that compression test and what else you've said i'd imagine burned up valves or possibly detonation breaking the ringlands on #3...you are probably really just going to have to yank that head off.

 

Well I just finish taking off the cam caps... this is what I have found...






The intake camshaft is okay but the exhaust broke. It was holding together until I started lifting the exhaust camshaft and noticed the other half of the camshaft was still laying on the head.


What now? Anything in my head may be screwed up besides camshaft? What is reusable now? What you guys think?
