LS = cheap
B16 = more money.

LS is good for a cheap swap and you can add turbo on the stock internals for cheap.
B16 is just my preference. The road that most people are against, lately.

B16 all the way. It's a better starting point with VTEC. You can run the B16 and when you decide you want more power, you can turbo or swap the bottom end with a 1.8 or 2.0. The B16 is a performance engine, whereas the LS wasn't meant to be.

I hope this doesnt turn into another b16 vs ls motor again..

I like 92-93 b18a with a ys1 tranny..

b16, i had a ls crx, now its a b16 crx, ls just doesnt have any top end, ull take a b16 from a stop wit a LS cuz of all the torque but once they r in vtec the b16 is gone top end wise .

do a b16, good platform to start off with

b16 head, gsr block.

or full gsr.

all the tourque and all the high revs.

sure its more money, but if i had a time machine, thats what id be running instead of this b16a.

b16 would be anyones best bet for a first swap the b16 does'nt have the take off like the LS does but by second gear you will be pasting a LS crx I say start with a B16
Grab a b16 with ys1 tranny that way you can put a turbo on and have fun
with it because a b16 turbo shifts to fast for the streets but thats just my .02 cents and set up

Lets get some times posted

completly bone stock b18a swap in my 89 hf with bald tires consistant 14.5s @94mph

I see alot of people with b16 swaps running 15s allthough I know there are tons of variables....same chasis same driver its close...Id def pass on a first gen b16 swap for a ls....99 b16 swap I can tell this thread may get ugly...I have to stand up for the ls

well like i said, time machine, id be running a 1.8 liter block, either gsr of ls.

but i like my b16, everything is good for different reasons, i beat a kid with an ls in his 89 hf, but we are both mostly stock, once you start to modify, everything goes out the window.

its all honda love anyway.

91 crx si, LS, ys1, ebay short ram, thermal cat back, bald tires and a broken motor mount (motor would hit the firewall thats how bad it was) 14.7@ 93mph 2.1 60'

http://www.norcalcrx.org/dyno/b16a_vs_b18a.gif

LS w/ ys1 vs b16 w/ ys1 - LS would come out on top everytime with equal drivers and equal weight cars.

Good thread. I'd still take the high hp B16 though. More peak HP and a couple of thousand more RPM's, the driver just has to keep the RPM's up. The LS looks like it would be the better street engine though and will be faster than the B16 with the same gearing BUT it'll also run out of RPM faster and have to upshift which negates the gearing if you know what I'm saying. We have the same argument about the 325iS w/4.10 vs M3. People will argue about the area under the curve but don't take into account the added area that the high RPM engine has after the low RPM engine has reached max rpm. In summary, if the B16 driver knows when to shift, he should be able to take the LS.

there's nowhere in the B16 powerband where it makes more torque
than the LS

so the B16 has an extra 2000rpm to go after the LS has to shift, big deal, even at its lowest point the LS makes more torque than the B16 at peak

edit: damnit, i told myself not to get in this argument...oh well

to ys1
to 92-93 gsr or jdm b16 ys1 trans

I have had ls and gsr in my crx...I recently sold my jdm gsr long block and opted to go with the ls because its way more bang for the buck.

Id go with what ever you can find for the best price in your area, but I am a turbo guy and I love ls turbo torque...cant even be matched stock for stock with a gsr turbo setup. building an engine is a different story gsr's are the ****.

2 of my good friends have eg civic's both equally shitty drivers one b18b/b16 trans the other jdm b16a/b16a tranny in the 1/8th mile ls takes the cake 1/4 cars are almost dead even just depends on who gets out quickest.

Just get what you like...dont listen to none of us

get an ls get some p30 pistons and some crower 404's and your top end problems are solved with an amazing power range for torque.

ls all the way baby!

NON-VTEC REPRESENT!

Even though i have a b16 in my crx, i think the ls is more bang for your buck like mentioned earlier, but the b16 is way more fun to drive. they are pretty much equal though.

i am also going to swap soon. and i think im going to get a b16, because its kind of the brains and top end. then later on im going to get a b20 or b18 bottom end (i found a lot of b18 blocks and ls trannys) for the torque and muscle.
