ok i'm a tech at a Chrysler dealership and i just got doing a side job for a friends sister. i put a jdm auto trans into her f22 90-93 accord. the trans was a replacement for her failing old trans. now the question's are:

will it hurt the trans if i put in atf+4 fluid? since i work at a chrysler dealership i have tons of the stuff and i finished the job after 6 pm so honda was closed and i just filled it with regular atf+4. this stuf is suppossedf to be the best ATF on the market.

also how dod i check the fluid level? should it be running in park or nutral? a guy at my work used to own a tranny shop and he said check it with the motor off. so i did and it's full after running the trans through the gears and warming it up.

now the problem. it shifts fine when it's cold but when it warms up the trans slips. i didn't charge this girl much to swap the trans out so if i have to ull the trans again i'm gonna be pissed. thanks for any help.

 

The best tranny fluid for "older" honda AT is obviously honda ATF fluid but in suppliment you can use dextron 3, I would honestly drain out the atf4 and refill with either honda fluid to see if the shifts tighten up, if not the tranny may not be in decent condition.

As for checking the fluid level check the fluid after it has warmed up and then shut off the car, just pull out the yellow dipstick wipe off the fluid and then reinsert the dipstick then recheck the fluid level .

 

yeah i checked it when it was hot and the engine turned off. i'm gonna take a shot and guess that the trans is bad. i'll have to call the company that i got it from and have them ship me another one. i just don't really don't wanna pull it out.

 

IMO it could be the tranny fluid, I have heard of this happening before. I would drain out the atf4 and put in honda atf of dexron3 atf fluid....it would be only a few bucks versus shipping out a new tranny AND pulling/replacing it to find out that it MAY have been the fluid.

 

how would o go about completely flushing the whole system? i need to get it all out of the converter as well. i might have a special tool at work for it. i hate auto trans and i always try to stay away from them.

 

I am sure some mechanic shops have a pump type system that flushes out almost all fluid. I don't know what else to suggest .

 

haha, i was thinking drain all the fluid from the trans then with the drain still out start it for a second and that should pump all the fluid out right? probly wouldn't hurt a stick box but i have no idea about a auto.

i've heard of people doing that... but it's not something i'd be willing to try on my car.

 

The following is from an earlier posting I made to another thread. Hope this helps.


This is the recommended HONDA procedure. You will need 12 quarts of HONDA ATF (you can use another ATF, but it can actually make the transmission shift firmer than before, and some people don't like that).
NEVER ATTEMPT TO CRAWL UNDER A CAR WITH JUST A JACK HOLDING UP THE VEHICLE!

1) Put the front of the car up on jackstands with the wheels off the ground. Put a large container under drain plug.
2) Remove the transmission drain plug (3/8" drive ratchet works fine). Let transmission drain and wipe sludge off drain plug.
3) Reinstall drain plug and snug (not tighten). Fill transmission with three quarts of ATF.
4) Start engine and shift into drive. Gently accelerate and let transmission upshift through the gears (don't go over 50 MPH).
5) Step on brakes and bring speedo to 0.
6) Shift into reverse and accelerate to 20 MPH.
7) Bring speedo back to 0 with brakes. Shift to park and shut off engine.
8) Repeat steps 2 through 7 TWO MORE TIMES.
9) Drain the transmission once more. Reinstall drain plug and tighten firmly (don't forget to reinstall crush washer).
10) Remove jackstands and put vehicle on level ground.
11) Fill transmission with 2 1/2 quarts of ATF. Start engine. Shift to drive, then reverse, then put back in park and shut off engine.
12) Check transmission fluid level. Top off if needed to bring fluid level to the top of the crosshatch marks on the dipstick.

ohwell....2 weeks with out my accord...guys im not gonna make it...im going crazy... i cant stand staying at home..


2 weeks so far and 5 weeks to go...

 

I did the above procedure on our Civic. Be sure and buy a new drain plug washer while you are at it = aprox. $1.00 * Note * The washer has a crush and a shiney side. The shiney side goes out. One case (12 qrts) of Honda ATF $50.00
At least one and maybe other dealers in my area do no do power flushes. So DIY and save aprox $100. PS When running in REVERSE I don't think you need to take it all the way to 20 mph. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but REVERSE is about the same gearing as Automatic 1st gear. 15mph should be enough.
*** Block the front of the Car up SOLID *** It will rock back and forth a little bit and is somewhat nerve-racking !!!!

 

i took it out for a ride today again and the trans is bad for sure. looks like i will be swapping it again for no charge. this really sucks. i already have a new trans on it's way. thanks again for all the help everyone.

What is the total capacity is for 98 accord auto tranny 4cyl in quarts. This is like filling brand new tranny for the first time ?? Cannot seem to find the spec on it.

Brand new completly emty to full is I think 7.3-7.5qt's. I may be a little off, but its in that area.
