well, i was leaving work last night. stopped at a stop sign, started off from the stop sign and it sounded like there was a jet engine under my car. I pulled over and checked it out, the mid section and the resonator came apart right at the weld (i didn't bottom out or anything). by the way this is a tanabe srm. To say the least i'm pretty pissed off. i've had the exhaust for about 18 months and up until now i've loved it. my friend at a exhaust shop said that he'll re-weld it for about $40 but that's 40miles away. does anyone know if i can drive this thing to the shop like it is or is that bad for my teg (and bad for my ears)?

 

That apparently is a common problem with the Tanabe SRM. I found this out after taking my SRM off after having it on for about 3 years. The exhaust was still in great shape, but I broke the hangar off at the weld just in front of the resonator.

It won't do any damage for you to drive it to the shop. It might be pretty annoying to your ears though. If it concerns you that much, see if you can get it towed there.

 

thanks for the advice man. i'll go ahead and drive it up there, i just wasn't sure if the lack of back pressure was a problem or not.

 

the stock muffler on my old ef came off when i was on my way home from college one weekend and i had the drive an hour without one, so i feel your pain. as you mentioned, the only damage done will be to your ear drums. just try not to accelerate too quickly

 

i'll post pix tomorrow. it bothers me that one of the welds came apart after a year and half. i'll probably replace it with a comptech if this new weld doesn't hold. thansk for the help.

 

Yeah post pics.. I have a Tanabe SRM and I'm curious to see what the cracked welds look like.

My resonator canister doesn't look like that on my Tanabe SRM cat-back. Maybe I have a different Tanabe B-pipe?

 

Got it fixed today, cost $40 at a custom exhaust shop. The welder said that this is a very common problem with cat back's.

 

same thing happened with mine...the welf for the hangers broke.....sucks

 

It happened again. I have now had the exhaust for about 3 1/2 years and it broke again at a different weld near the rear hanger. Another $40 down the drain. I love the exhaust note and the looks of the SRM but the welds suck. Oh well.

 

Why does it break? Do you think you need a flexpipe?

 

I'm not sure why it keeps breaking. The welder just said that it must have had $hitty welds from the factory.

 

haha exact same **** happened to my old SMR. After my friend welded it, it just got louder and louder everyday so I just sold it because I was getting tired of the sound.
