I'm not interested in dvd player / tv screen. I'm asking about single din decks. Anyone know if this is in the works?
50+ albums on one dvd+r (just found out this could be done)
Anyone think this will happen anytime?

i think an Ipod would suit your needs better beacause at least that way you can easily add and remove songs/albums without burning a new disc.
I already dislike making mp3 cd's, because it takes way too many songs to fill up one cd, if i want to burn something i'd have to wai until i have enough songs to burn a full cd, neither do i like burning half used cd-r's lol.
i do have a Audiobahn heat unit model A3851 that read DVD, so i can fill it with mp3 and listen it for a week long...

Well an Ipod is just too much money. I could have all 25 gigs of my music on 7 dvd+r's. Besides that, I get 100 pack of Ridata dvd+r's for less than $40.

I knew what you were going to say after the first sentence
Man, I've got so much music... When my collection was not as large an cd-r felt like it was holding a huge amount. Now that I see how many dvd+r's hold, that amount just doesn't seem to high anymore.

Is that why this thing is $500+
Damn, wish I could afford $500 for a deck
Can you list some other models such as Kenwood or Pioneer that will play the dvd+r's? Thanks!!
PS <> You must do an assload of driving for the dvd+r to last you a week for listening. I've made one dvd/mp3 disc which had like 55 hours of music
Thanks for all the input none the less

I was told on another forum that the JVC: KD-DV5000 also will play dvd+r mp3 discs. No local shops have this for me to verify

This deck is just over $200. You sure it will play dvd+r (4.7gb) discs?
If so awesome

How about you take one of your dvd loaded with mp3s and go down to your local car audio shop and start popping it into some of the decks. You don't have to buy anything and the salesman will be more then happy to let you just so he knows.
I just installed my 760 tonight.... love it!
Reading the manual here it says:
Plays MP3, CD/ CD-R/ CD-RW (ISO9660 Level1/ Level 2 standard recordings), WMA files, WAV files, (Linear PCDM (LPCM)/MS ADPCM recordings). Will that cover it?

Not sure. Doesn't say dvd+/-r
Like Auex said, I'm going to hit all the stores with a dvd+r on hand. That will let me know for sure. The stores won't mind because that will be another feature to help sell the deck

I hit Best Buy and one local audio shop yesterday. Tried a nice Blaupunkt (sp?), a nice Panasonic, a Alpine deck along with a few others at the local shop. All gave an error for the dvd+r disc
Went to Best Buy and tried EVERY one of their single din decks and not a single one played the disc

Anyone have updates or personal experiences with dvd-mp3 headunits? Are there any sub $250 ones that can do dvd-rw mp3 discs? What are the good models to check out for this?
i have an alpine 1003 got it yrs ago.. and bought some ebay dvd player tv tuner for like 150. well.. not as cool as the new stuff since it takes 2 dins. but ive been burning dvd mp3s for a long time. i have tons of music and im lazy to burn cds all the time. has folders and etc. most of the indashs ive played with dont read dvd mp3s.. only normal cdr mp3s. which is nice. but in traffic ive gone up to #400+ on my mp3 list.
have u looked at the Alpine 9860 head unit. It plays dvds, mp3s,wma,cd, and it has a video output. And you can get an expansion box (k420i) and add an ipod if u want. And it will play your burned dvds as well.
alpine 9860 is bout 360 w/o shipping. its nice but doesnt have the dvd controls (ie arrows) on the unit which makes it a lil bit of a hassel to scroll through different folders. i'll stick with my dvd/tv tuner, worst comes to worst hook up an ac adap. and use it for my room lol.
forgot to mention music videos. around 30 of them on 1 dvd.
mp3s somewhere around 1100 on 1 dvd

I prefer the burned disc option also. It less clunky and you dont have adpaters going everywhere.
You have unlimited storage. DVD's are cheap. I can't imagine needing more then 1 DVD. Currenly I have a 6 disc MP3 changer and have over 800 songs. A DVD would be even more then this.

I personally think a better idea than either burning DVD-Rs or an iPod is to buy a head unit that has SD card playback. JVC makes several head units that play SD cards. And Fry's sells a low-priced (~$120) HU by XO-Vision that gets the job done well enough (and also plays USB flash drives). You can then buy a 2GB card for ~$100 or a 1GB card for significantly less than $100 (or any other size you want). Hell, maybe you already have a card or two that you use for a camera. Then, put your songs on the card with a card reader simply by clicking and dragging (no iTunes or other such software required for the data transfer itself). And writing to the card is MUCH faster than burning a CD or DVD. Furthermore, you can rewrite any time you want, deleting only those songs you no longer want (or, of course, deleting them all if you so wish). Finally, you don't have to worry about the additional cost of an iPod or adaptor, nor do you have to worry about having wires strung about for the iPod. This is a relatively unpopular way to go (at least in the iPod-crazy USA). But it DEFINITELY has its merits.
