i have a 95 ex coupe and the owner before me removed the power steering and didnt loop the system right he just let all the fluid leak out so the rack is messed up. will a manual rack just bolt right up?

a manual rack will bolt up..no modifications

 

you need the knuckle off the non power steering rack too.

 

so witch is it no mods or nead the knuckle?

 

just take your old rack off and put the the new one back on its a bolt on affair..are you putting the manual rack into an integra?

 

there are no mods needed but the knuckle off a power rack is different than the non power rack you need the one from the non power rack and it will bolt up.

the steering knuckles are different? couldnt you use different tie rod ends or somethin? that would be a pain to take off the whole knuckles, ya gotta unbolt all that ****, rather than one ball joint, its 3. and the caliper, and the rotor and ****.

 

it should bolt right up...we put an ex rack in a cx and everyhing bolted up...i dont remmeber switching anything difficult

 

You'll need to swap over a complete 1992-1995 Honda Civic CX manual rack. Good luck finding one at the junks. New ones at Honda are a bit pricey.

Have you tired to salvage the rack? Looping it with fresh P/S fluid and checking if the problems goes away?

when i am cruising down the road and i can turn the wheel about 4 to 5 inchs with out the car turning, its all over the road

 

Hmm... My wheel has about an inch in play before it moves. Last week I started hearing a horrible creaking noise coming from the front of the car during braking and when i turned while still... could this be my steering rack? I know i dont have ps but i believe the car did at one point and the previous owner removed it. any ideas?

 

im pretty sure you dont need the new knuckles for the rack swap.
i put gsr brakes on and i dont have ps. bolts straight on.
all u need to do is swap the rack.
they do sell a ps loop kit so you loop it. its somewhere on here.
ps rack has a faster ratio then the non ps one. also es makes bushings for the ps one and not the non ps one.
but mugen dose makes bushings for the non ps rack i plan to get them maybe in spring time.
anyways im just babbling usless ****.
but you can swap another ps rack in and loop it the right way. its alittle harder to turn but not too bad i gess. just throwing options out so you dont pull ur hair out trying to find a non ps rack lol

 

u have to remember this is danas car and its hard for her to drive, thats why im swaping it out, ..

i did alot of research on the power to manual rack swap. found what i was looking for and did it i have a 94 ex coupe and put in a dx manual steering rack, it went right in i didn't have to change a thing also while i was in there i put in my poly bushings from energy suspesions and everything works like a dream i did have to buy new outer tie rod ends because the ball joints were old and decrepid that was about 40 per side from the dealer though, but if your outter tie rods ends are still good then you don't need to buy anything

by the way my manual rack cost me 50 buck at the junk yard

 

i bought a manual rack for my ej from a junkyard and then proceeded to go to honda 3 different times trying to get the right steering knuckle that goes under the dash.. none of them fit right so i just looped off my power rack and now it is going bad. do u have to change the male end that comes off of the steerig wheel somehow?

ok... question. how is the rack "messed" up? there is no need to loop the syspem, you can just drain it and plug the rack. despite what you read on h-t, i have been doing this for years, before h-t was even a url...

anywhom, what is the problem with the rack? pm me if necessary.

adjust the play in the rack. helms decribes this in detail. you need to have a special wrench, or a wrench fabbed up out of steel.

you can adjust it...to a point. if you have half a turn play, your rack is done....

 

Back from the dead

First off I have a 94 civic ex with all the power options

Well I just found out the car I bought has a bad rack & pinion along with a busted front axel. What I would like to do is remove the bad “power” rack & pinion and replace it with a manual set up. So far after reading this thread it seems like I need to find a manual rack at a yard or buy one “but from who”? Is there any more info on how to do this?
