So I finally made an appointment to see the ref and get my swap BAR'd.
I've been running on a temporary permit since August when I got my swap done. (Registration was due back in April
) and I have until the end of November on this permit.
My setup:
B18C1 USDM motor (1995)
P73 USDM ITR pistons
Stock intake box w/ integra arm
Stock integra header/exhaust manifold (it's a 91 teg manifold. This is the only thing I'm really concerned about since its a 4-1 and it places the o2 sensor up closer to the head, instead of down by the cat. I'm still running a 4-wire o2 though..)
Carsound cat, 14" resonator, and an ES Oval muffler (all 2.5")
AZ Race & Machine billet mounts
P72 obd1 USDM GSR ECU (stock maps, chipped for vtec at 5500)
I rebuilt the whole motor about 2000 miles ago. the carsound cat is also 2000 miles old.
Think that header will be a problem?
Hopefully I'll pass. I'll update this tomorrow after I get back. wish me luck.

Ryan, whats wrong with yours? still just tailpipe problems?
I can't wait until I get this thing passed. I've been waiting to go to the drag strip for fear of breaking something before I get my car registered.

Good luck! It's not really all that bad dealing with them if you are straight forward and adult about it. (I've got a Ref'd B18C in 89 hatch)
I don't think I'd worry too much about the O2 location. The reason that I say this is that even if they "tag" that aspect of the check as not passable, they should still run you through the remainder of the test.
At that point, just drive the car to a muffler shop and have it relocated (drive home with the original O2 hooked up). Then have the Ref recheck it. You get two checks for your payment.
I'm a Licensed Civil Engineer (in the San Fernando Valley) and dealing with places like the Building Department, it's obvious that they want to find something wrong. It proves their worth. So, if it's an easy fix, everybody goes home with a smile.

I wouldn't worry too much either about the placement. If its a stock OEM manifold they might not even check. When I got my B18C1 swap BAR'd in my CRX they never even looked for the O2 under the car. I was running a DC 4-2-1 header
BTW I WAS the 1st in our HT group Ryan to get BAR'd !!!! I have the sticker you don't

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I hope since its a stock manifold it'll be alright. It has a heat shield and everything too, so its very stock looking.

Yeah I'm in SD. I'm going to the Chula Vista ref since I heard they were a little easier/nicer than the Escondido one.
3 1/2 hours to go...

HAHAHA WRONG WesV beat ya!!! Good try Vee!!! Who was done first with the swap, me or you... I believe we started at the same time, and I got ya by a good 2-3 months(mine was done in 2-3 days). Dont forget to put your HG on right
Im just playin man
Its all fun!!
Well, I need to get my new cat on, and re-test her. I an now 100% sure my 02 wiring is right now (stupin universal 02's!! and there different colors) So, theoretically I should pass with the new carsounds cat. I just need to take the old one off, and have a exhaust shop make the universal hi-flow match
So I should have it soon... thats all I can think of, if it dosent pass then, im stumped. The engine just runs sooooo strong, and burns no oil, so I dunno
GL, fingers crossed for ya man!!

I'm pretty sure its high enough to go on the rollers. It goes onto flatbed trailers and it got up onto an alignment rack with little to no problems. We'll see how it goes. I'm leaving my place in about 30 minutes to go over there. I'm taking a digital cam, so hopefully I can update with pics when I get back.

HA HA all right Ryan is correct, he finished his swap and got running before me but hey I work for a living too you know!!! I got my sticker in October so Wes did beat me. BUT hey he's not in our local HT group. AT least I was the only one with a BAR sticker at the CRXPO meet!!
But seriously good luck to you man!! (MR_CRX)

Down here in Chula there's nothing but Sq. mi of Smog shops.....you can find one that will trip over the exhaust tester and pass you. and wa-la a certficate.....but you have to be carefull.....IT'S ILLEGAL....hahaha...anyway....i passed my hf in dec....and now i got to go and put all the right emissions on my b16a. Good luck to you dude.....tell us how it goes..
Best of luck to you. Personally, i would worry about the exhaust manifold but thats just me. Awaiting my appointment to see the REF...

So, I'm back.
I didn't pass, but it was SO close!
Here's how it went down: (kinda long, sorry! but there's pics!
)
I got there around 2:00, 10 minutes early. There was a 99-00 Si leaving and the guy told me to bring my car on in. There was an older gentleman (in his 40's I'd imagine. I know WesV, that's not old
) and a younger guy in his 20's or so. The shop was deserted except for them.
I sat down with the head guy and he asked what had brought me in. I told him I had swapped an integra engine in and wanted to do it the right way and make it legit. He asked if it was an LS or a GSR and was impressed when I told him GSR. The younger guy went out and popped the hood and started checking the timing. It was at 14BTDC, so still within spec.
I told the head guy that the intake manifold was aftermarket and he immediately replied "Oh, is it a Skunk?" so I showed him the CARB E.O sticker and he just nodded and cared nothing about it anymore. They pulled up the carpet and checked that the ECU was a p72.
They didnt care about the exhaust manifold. I heard them mention something about "the sensor being up farther" but they still passed me on that. The only problem was my PCV hose from the valve cover to the intake arm was just some hose I found at Home Depot since I couldnt find anything the right size at Kragen/AutoZone. That was the only part of visual that I failed.
They drove it up onto the rollers (barely made it!) and did the 15mph test.

So I had 14 ppm too much HC. New distributor, new cat, fresh rebuilt ~2000 miles ago. What do you guys think will help?
Overall, I was very happy with the experience. Nice guys, very good experience. They seriously spent less than 5 minutes inspecting under the hood. The head guy complimented me on this being my first swap. He said he could tell I had done my research. (good ol' HT
)
And since you put up with reading all that, here's some pictures to make you guys happy

I heard that higher octane gas will help. Especially if you shoot it into the eyes of the testers, print out a passing sheet, run like crazy.

Yeah. I had about a 20 mile freeway drive on the way there at 70-80mph, which with the YS1 GSR tranny i have, is between 4k-5krpms. It was definitely hot.
I remember reading about the cat needing to be hot, so I drove around town before I hit the freeway and tried to keep it more in the upper RPMs.
The guy mentioned that I should double check the plug gap.
I think I'm also going to get a new air filter. I'm not sure how old this one is, but its pretty dirty.
I've done some research and it seems that if you're running rich, your NOX goes way down and your HC (unburnt fuel) comes up.. and if you run lean, your HC comes down but your NOX comes up because of combustion temperatures. Maybe I can burn a new chip with a little leaner mixture. I have some room to play with on the NOX side. (max allowed is like 700 and I'm at 35.) Anyone recommend this?
