ATS FD: Constant caffeine high!
after reading and hearing reviews by chris93si, scott @ sandmracing.com, yoshi234, and MANY others, i decided to get this setup. as of late, there seems to be a high interest in the ATS Final Drive gearset. i thought it would be nice to post another thread to give those who are on the "edge" to help make their decision.
parts
ats 4.928 final drive gearset
toda lightweight flywheel
exedy clutch (stage 1 organic)
mugen baffled oil pan

ats 4.928 final drive gearset

toda lightweight flywheel

exedy clutch (stage 1 organic)
impressions
i took a quick drive early this morning. it was really the first time to actually test the modifications out. after the install, we were all way too tired. of course it was taken for the obligatory test drive, but not long enough to gather good notes of the improvements. the 2nd and 3rd gears are really strong. especially 3rd. great motor response from the lightweight flywheel. heel-toeing is much easier with the reduced inertia. the acceleration is best described as "urgent". the car seems to be on a caffeine high all the time! quoting alex, the motor is "always ready".
another impression is that the clutch is slightly stiffer than stock, which is expected.
next impression will be at the next hpde. i still remember riding w/ yoshi a few years ago thinking, "damn his car sounds different". hopefully i'll get to make the same music at the next event.
thanks
thank you to all the vendors who sold me the parts. great customer service and delivery. top notch! and special thanks to the installers - mikehawnder and rance. getting that left axle out was a real chore.
to the axle "do-hickey" that lance made to get that sucker out!
kepani-who might go for a drive this afternoon too.

Congrats on the new goodies. Great set-up!
Seems like can't go a day on Honda-Tech without reading something positive about the ATS FD.
<-----reaching into wallet to check for funds.

The Mugen pan is a stock pan, but baffled, so on a roadcourse or whatever oil is kept around the pickup. It doesn't improve performance in the slightest, but it will prevent your engine from having oil starvation, which can cause all sorts of problems.
congrats, I know exactly what it feels like. You will like it, until you need to do a long cruise and your gas mileage goes into the pooper.

the other parts in the picture on top of the box are required if you have a usdm transmission. (2) needle bearings, (1) distance collar, and (1) 1st gear.
the exedy clutch came with the clutch disc, pressure plate, a new throwout bearing, new pilot bearing (for the flywheel), and the alignment tool.
kepani-who still has yoshi's 1st gear for next weekend?

Me = wondering why all the sudden current interest in the ATS FD?
What have we been saying for 3 years now?
[hangs head low] BTW Yoshi, I again forgot to ask Yasu and Rodney about the 1st gear. Sorry.
Is it any poor type of consolation if Rodney co drove with me last weekend at a NASA-X and we were just so busy that I didn't remember?
Sorry, just IM Rodney if you still didn't get answers to your questions.

I see.
I guess I was just lucky at the right place and the right time.
I remember driving the "test subjects" car equipped as such and was just blown away and knew I needed the gear asap. It was one of the first things I did.
Funny enough as one of the few mods that I've done, it's still the most enjoyable and noticeable. Combined with the Toda FW of course.
