Default B18C1 making a little grinding sound. (prolly camshaft) please help.

Ok. So last night when i got home from work I heard a slight moaning from my engine compartment. The moaning is not constant but comes and goes in little intervals. I figured it was my PS pump so i opened the hood and tried to locate the sound. To the best of my deduction it sounds like it is coming from the exhaust camshaft on the gear side. Also it seems to be leaking oil from the bolt on that exact same side. It wasn't leaking while I was idilng but it looks as if it had sprayed onto the underside of the hood. Almost as if it was VTEC related(does VTEC play with the exhaust cam too?). also the entire engine compartment smelled of gas rather strongly and I have been burning oil for about a month.

Sorry for the long post but I really would like to get parts today and I am not sure when the shop closes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the moaning is dependent on throttle position, but not on RPMs, then I'm pretty sure it's your hubs. I have the same problem.

I'd get that gas-fume smell out of the engine bay problem fixed QUICK.

What exactly do you mean by hubs? and i haven't ran any serious tests as i am not in a good place to do that yet. I have to drive it sixty miles to my friends house so that I can work on it. (Damn me and my going to college!)

I would pretty much say this is the last high-strung 4 cyl. engine for me.

Whats that suppose to mean? Honda engines are bulletproof, IF you take care of them properly. I don't think its fair that you blame the engine, you should blame the maintainer of the engine.

I know what you mean, but for younger guys in college, 4 bangers are nice. Cheaper. But after college im definatly upgrading to something with a high output turbo 6.

Hubs...I meant wheel bearings.

I forgot to ask if the moaning sound happens only while you drive. Does it also come on while idling? If so, then disregard my post...otherwise, here's a link that might help: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=74041

Can you explain the said oil leak a little more? And can you confirm that the liquid sprayed on the underside of your hood is definitely oil?

And don't give up too quick on 4 cylinders. Once the problems are gone (c'mon now...what do you expect from a '94 model?), you'll have more faith in your car.

Ok I did a road test and now know where the gas smell is coming from. Imagine on the intake side towards the timing belt that bolt that goes through valve cover into the head. And there is supposed to be like a black washer there. Well my bolt broke and that piece is gone. When the engine is running you can smell and feel the air being pumped through that little hole. Would that have anything to do with the moaning? Also the sound is a lot worse when the engine is cold and as it gets warmer the sound eventually gets quieter and quieter.

as for the oil it is coming from the bolt that is in the same location as the one above but on the exhaust side.

thanks so far.

J/K about the 4 cyl. I am just a little frustrated
But A Inline six does have more potential.

BTW Will i have to go to a Honda/Acura dealer to get those bolts. OR will I be able to get them at a parts store? They should have those things stockpiled at parts stores because they always freakin' break!!
