Erratic idle problem
Anyone any clues on what could be going on with my prelude 95 vtec?
I have an erratic idle at start up from cold until fully warmed up.
It sometimes stalls when coming to a halt, or the idle really drops nearly to zero before coming back up again, also during normal driving.
Its perfectly fantastic when at normal operating temperature.
Thanks
Andrew

Re: Erratic idle problem (prelude95vtec)
its your Fast Idle Thermo Valve for sure.
Pull the intake arm off the throttle body. Inside the TB, is a little round hole. Put your finger over it. Is there air flow while the engine is COLD ??? If not its shot, and this causes erratic idle during warming.

Re: Erratic idle problem (98TypeSH)
Hello Mr 98TypeSH
Thank you very much for the information. I have passed it onto my garage and it certainly surprised them!
I hope this cures the problem.
Many thanks

Re: (puffxy)
pretty sure it has to be replaced. you could removed it and try cleaning it, pretty sure its just a little pluger that clicks over to allow air.
its like 58 bucks from the dealer

Re: (98TypeSH)
I hate to tell you this, but the garage checked it and have said that its working fine. All the hoses seem to be intact as well. I will be picking the car up this afternoon with an unsuccessful report.
I don't know what else to do now.
Bugger.
Anyway thanks for your advice, its something they hadn't tried.

No, you just open it up, screw the plastic screw on the inside in enough that it is completely against the metal cone, and close it all up. If you want, you can bypass the water hoses completely and basically get rid of it.
For the original poster, even if they said it was fine, try what I just mentioned and you will most likely fix your problem. There are writeups all over the place for this mod...

Re: (BrokeLude)
you dont need to have the shop check it, you can check it yourself as i had said before. pull off the intake&intake arm and check to see if there is air flowing from the little hole in the throttle body. why have a shop check it when its that simple? so they can charge you for labor then lie ? check it out.

Re: (98TypeSH)
If I knew what you were talking about I would try it!
If someone could take some photos to show where it is and what to do, I would most appreciate it.
My garage is a reputable one and took your comments seriously, so if I can't sort it out I'm sure they can. They are as curious to know what it could be too.
Cheers
