Default Got a garbage B18B long block from Hmotorsonline... here is my story

I know there is a ton of topics of hmotorsonline but im pretty FU$@IN pissed. I went to Hmotorsonline in person back in october to buy a B18B longblock from them. I made the trip out there from northern cali which was about a 7 hour drive. I go there and and see a small wherehouse with all these engines just sitting there, and a small office where i assume steve handles all the orders. So i deal with the other guy working there because steve was busy on the phone or something. The guy i forgot his name he looked mexican told me $700 cash for the long block, now im thinkin ok wtf? What if the engine is garbage(bad compression, head gasket, etc.)? I ask him, and he says if i have any problems with the engine just to take it back to them. But how can they do that without any proof that i bought the engine from them? He assures me that he will. So i give him the cash and he loads the engine in my van. Almost 4 months later i finnaly get a chance to install my motor and replace everything (water pump, tensioner, timing belt, etc.) I let the engine run a few minutes and i notice its blowing white smoke. Now im thinkin is it a bad head gasket? Then C.E.L. code 71 comes up- Cylinder #1 misfire. Then i run the compression and gives me #1 cyl.-120, #2 cyl. 160, #3 cyl. 170, #4 cyl.#160. This motor is crap. He ssured me that the engine had 190pse compression accross the board, and a 100% start up warranty. The only problem is i bought the engine from him almost 4 months ago in cash so no receipt. I cant call him today so im SOL till monday when i give steve a call and hopefully he will handle my situation in a professional matter. Otherwise im going to have to take this situation into my own hands. And bring a caravan of my boys and my cousins. Now my real question is there anyone in the same situation as me? I mean it has been a long time and i dont have a receipt that i bought the engine because i wanted to same some money. Just need some space to vent and looking for any hep i can before i jump to any conclusions. thanks everyone.

Steve hast the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I ordered a jdm sir2 motor w/lsd from him. The shipping company dropped the motor and cracked the tranny and ripped the intake manifold out of the block. They left the motor sitting on the pallet in my driveway and rolled out. I got home and saw the motor was damaged and called Steve right away. He stated as soon as the the shipping company picked up the damaged motor he would ship me out a new motor which was all wrapped up waiting for me. They came two days later and picked up the motor. I called Steve to let him know the status. He said he wanted to wait for the motor to arrive to evaluate the damage...... Two weeks go by. I called him every other day. He finally stated he sold the motor he had waiting for me. I asked for my money back. He said "ok, as soon as I get the money from the insurance claim". I called the shipping company the same day and they stated they already paid him for the damage claim. I called him back and he said he was cutting a check and overnighting it to me. A week went by.... no check. I called him every day and he quit returning my calls. Another week went by. Again, no check. I call him one more time and he said he just mailed it out via normal 1st class mail. I got the check 4 days later and it was $175 short. I called and left 3 messages asking for the $175. He never called back. I gave up. I ordered my replacement from IAS. No problems at all. Steve will never get $.01 from me again.

give the motor some time. run it a little longer, and see if it still blows out white smoke, if it doesnt, try checking the compression again. Did you have the throttle at WOT when you did the compression check?

I am in the same situation, hand picked out a h22 front clip that I thought looked good, he said he would pull it out and I can come by the next day. Came back didn't have it pulled from the front clip so I told him wtf. He said he had one out from another clip I told him I thought I picked out the motor I wanted. He told me he pulled another engine outta another front clip and that I can take that one and save time instead of waiting and was assured that it was in great shape, that it had 245 psi across. Took it home saved up money for timing belt, water pump, etc. Went to change the timing belt and it wasn't even an original Honda belt. (jdm engines with 45k mile is a Myth) Whats up with that. I just let it slide, months went by got enough for mounts, axles, and other crap. Fired it up, did my own compression test (dry). #1 260 (wtf) #2 245 #3 220 #4 200, I was like ****! Then did a wet one and all cylinders were pretty equal. Dam rings!! $2150 for h22 change over, Can't do **** now its been way to long and it is a USED MOTOR....Just gotta deal with it. Now saving up for a rebuild (donations welcomed )

no i didnt have the it at WOT, i forgot that step in the process of checking the compression. But its a thick white smoke like its burning water or something, also remember that its throwing a C.E.L. code 71. I only let it run to normal operating temperature then shut it off. But no matter how many good engines hmotors sends out it doesnt cover up all the bad rep they have now. I would not reccomend anyone to go through them again. If i had a good enough case i would sue them for all hes worth and break his legs. It may seem kinda harsh but thats just how i feel right now. Just think how you would feel if you took a 14 hour trip back and forth and a few months later you have a crap motor with no proof that you bought it from them to get warranty coverage. feel me? Thanks for everyones replys so far.

yea ive come to conclusions just to open it up and hopefully its just the head gasket and rings. its really frustrating to think about taking the engine out, bringing it back, drivging back up north and installing it. what if i go back pick up another engine and its total garbage again? And all this stress over trying to help my sister out.

code 71 could be a lot of things. Could be really worn out distributor cap and/or rotor and/or spark plug wires and/or spark plugs.

i changed the cap/rotor/plugs, everything new. Hopefully its just the head gasket thats bad. So far i havent seen any water mix witht the oil yet just seen thick white smoke. I was just thinking of just changing it instead of going through all of the hassle of taking it out and putting it back. This is definitely the last time im going through hmotors.

I never bought anything from them so I'm not defending hmotors or anything but why don't you talk to them first, if they give you a hard time then you can bitch about them...doesn't make any sense to post this before you even give them a chance to straighten things out for you. good luck

I feel for you too. I bought a B20Z from hmotors that had a different distributor than it was supposed to and the alternator pulley was damaged like it had been dropped so I have to get a new one of those. I havent installed it yet so after hearing about your bad luck with them I hope mine runs well.

USFbestways fucked me over on shipping. I dont know why hmotors uses them. Shipping was like $185 and they never delivered it and tried to tell me that they didnt have my phone number to contact me. But that turned out to be bullshit because once I finally got the motor right there taped to the pallet was my shipping label WITH my phone number and ALL contact information. It had been sittin at the terminal for like two weeks and no one did **** about it. USF also refused to refund my shipping even though they "gaurantee on time devilvery".

I know this is an hmotorsonline topic but hmotors uses USFbestways so yeah, its relevant

So even though hmotorsonline has "HT Cred" people have to let others know that they got fucked over. That is not called bitching, thats called passing on valuable information so others dont get fucked too.

u have to understand if u get raped it is like u can't trust bro

so if u even bother u might just do something wrong for the reply they might give u

like he said he doesn't want to bring his cousin's and friend's

for what to get in bigger trouble???

and in this neighbor it ain't worth it

so just forget it and they will get what they deserve

trust me

i believe **** like that

yo bondo if this goes further out and causes more headaches , you should report this to the Better Business Bureau and have them deal with H motors, they can do pretty much anything to a Business.... if it gets that serious!

"The Better Business Bureau system administers BBB AUTO LINE to help automobile manufacturers and individual customers resolve disputes concerning alleged manufacturing defects. Thirty-four companies participate in this program. This informal, out-of-court settlement mechanism is free to consumers. "

He expexcts them to live up to there word, and since this motor is garbage they should refund his money or give him another engine. But I think you might have screwed yourself by not getting a receipt. When I picked up my engine from Osaka I had them give me 2 receipts: 1 for crossing the border (saying I had payed under $1,000), and 1 with the correct price. Anytime you pay cash you HAVE to get a receipt.

To the thread starter, I hope you get it fixed...

To the other e-thugs in here: You need to stop bitching.

I ordered my B16A from them. I got it perfect, spotless, and in GREAT condition. I had a baseline dyno run of 155hp, so my little freak motor is the best. The only problem was a bad knock sensor which he gladly replaced pronto... Shipping 2000 miles without a scratch is always an A+ in my book.

You guys just need to treat the man with some respect, and I'm sure he'll give you all some as well.

It's in response to the guys who were pretty much stating that they treated Steve like ****. That always annoys me, and if people treat me like that (especially a younger guy with an attitude) I usually just give them nothing. If I get no respect, they get no respect. That's how the world works, and a guy threatining me instead of asking me nicely will NEVER get anywhere.... and the way Steve talked on the phone to me about my knock sensor, it appears that he is used to people ******* him over as well. He documents every motor, he has the paperwork, and he has photos of all the sensors as proof if someone tries to get a new one... All I'm saying is that you guys with problems either treated the situation the wrong way, or you just aren't telling us something. So I'm sticking up for the 99% of Hmotors customers that are satisfied.

why didn't you just compression test it while you were there? all you needed is a battery and jumper cables to the starter
