Default My first shot at a catch can.

Figured it was about time I tried to build one of these. Never built one before but seen enough of them in pictures. I incorporated a bracket to hold my fuel filter. I don't build much stuff this big. I piddle with aluminum. I was amazed how much heat I had to get into it to get a puddle moving. I played with 120hz on the fittings and 200hz on the seams. I was thinking it would get me a bit more penetration on a butt weld. Not sure... I'm still learning. But I'm having a good time.

Started with 1/16 tungsten (what I normally just leave in the torch), burned it to a crisp trying to get a puddle moving at 100 amps. Put in 3/32 tungsten and turned it up to 125 and it was better. Main body of the tank is 3x6 inches. Big fittings are 10 -AN, and the drain is a 6 -AN

I offset the fittings because I like the look of braided line. Seems a shame to stack them on top of each other when you can see them both when they're offset.

That looks really good, especially for a first try. I'd put it into my car

If they were Earls, pretty likely. Summit has the best bang for the buck on fittings, Summit branded. About 1/2 the price.

Best case scenario, 54 cubic inches. Looks like it's just short of a liter or 1 quart. I'm of the mind that seeing as how my little air filter isn't wringing wet with oil, and was my only crankcase ventilation, it's not likely this can will ever see anything in it. Time will tell.

Didn't set up an internal baffle. I'm of the mind that if my little air filter wasn't wringing wet with oil, there's no way I'm forcing fluid down a line that's 6 times bigger with any kind of velocity that would require a baffle. A baffle would be in place to slow movement of something, in this case, either oil or air pressure. If you could hang that air filter directly off the valve cover without it leaking oil (as it does now with a MUCH smaller and higher velocity hole) and there is no problem, I don't foresee a problem with no baffle.

That said, I did take the tube that the air filter mounts to, and mount it lower than the first -AN fitting, as a baffle of sorts.

My personal, opinion is that a baffle is not needed on my car. If I'm wrong, I'll build another with a baffle. Ain't nothing but some more welding.

The baffle is a really good idea. If your motor is fresh and has less tha 5% leakdown you really won't get much blow by, but on a motor with some miles on it you'll get q bit. Especially once you add boost to the equation. A lot of catch cans aren't baffled and still work ok. You can do what lots of people do and stuff some filler in there to knock the oil out of the air. I'm not a fan of that technique but it works for some. I'd leave it and if and when you begin to get blow by I'd look at adding the baffle.

Never. Takes to long... ...lol... Almost makes that $200 for a can seem like a good deal. First one is the worst. I'd order material dimensioned if I did it again, save that time I spent hand fitting things.

looks good, I just got a bunch of work done on one for myself. 3" diameter tube about 6" tall, used 2 -10 AN's and theres a small baffle inside the can directly over the -10 bungs. The rest of the can is stuffed with stainless steel wool. Need to weld a fitting for a breather, and one for a drain still.

Summit fittings are def. the way to go.
