Default Temp guage?

ok, so i attended a wedding this weekend in Raleigh and drove the R...

I have been watching the temp guage since i purched the car this past wednesday....

iirc the temp guage needle is supposed to sit between 2nd and 3rd hatch mark on the guage(cluster) when fully warmed up, correct?

anyways, the needle is not moving consistently.... i.e i drove from point a to point b on I40 and the needle did not move to between those marks.....about 15 miles, plenty of time for the engine to reach full operating temp.....the needle stayed at the first mark...

well, i had to stop and get gas... when i turned the car back on after filling up the needle went to the correct position(between 2 and 3 hatch mark)....

it has been doing this for the past 5 days.....

so, my question is....

is the guage in the cluster faulty, or the sending unit on the engine?

any thoughts greatly appreciated.....

EDIT: car is bone stock 130k miles

sounds like your thermostat is stuck

once it was back in its normal position, did it go back down when you started driving again? if so, i'd tackle that first since its not too bad of a fix

no, once it reaches the normal position, it stays there.....it may go down to the second hatch mark barely, but pretty much stays between 2nd and 3rd

hmm, how warm is it outside?

maybe if there is a cool night, let it warm up to normal and then go driving when it's cooler out

if there is no check engine light, i can't see it being the ECT sensor

ill keep looking into other possibilities in the meantime
