D-series in a DC Integra
To start off, I'm a DSM guy, and know little about Hondas. Anyways, I'd like a reliable daily driver that gets great fuel economy, to battle the rising costs of fuel.
With the high volume of thefts around the Detroit area, there have been many Integra shells that have been recovered. Most of them, the engine and trans have been taken, but the interior, suspension, and body are mostly in tact.
I'd like to keep this project as low budget as possible.
I came across a nice 97 GSR, and I'm looking to drop in a D16 from a EG. I know about the legality about swapping older engines into newer cars, but this will be an "off-road use" vehicle.
Michigan also doesn't have any smog testing, whatsoever.
I believe all I need is the D16 engine, manual trans, and axles correct?
The D16 engine would more than likely be a OBD1, but the chassis is an OBD2. Can I use the stock B18C wiring harness on the D16 engine, without swapping the harness out, or modifying it? I believe I need an OBD2 dizzy, correct? What else would I need? Which ECU should I be running?
Can I use the stock B18C mounts, or would I have to switch over to the D-series mounts? Will the D-series axles line up to the splines in the B-series hubs?
What about the powersteering, and A/C, would the B-series powersteering pump and air condensor bolt-onto the D-series block? I'd like to retain those as-well.
And finally, I'm not sure if the EG uses a hydro or cable trans. Would I need any converters? What I need to change the shift linkage or cables?
I'd like to keep this project as low budget as possible.
Thanks again. Any comments, ideas, or feedback would be appreciated.

Well your going to need some Mounts, motor and tranny, Axles, Shift linkage. And you cant use the B18c1 harness on the D16. your are going to have to find a converted harness. Maybe http://www.rywire.com might have them or you send yours in and they do it. for the ECU im not sure. Lets see what other people say. BUMP

I want to build a cheap, reliable, DD for the least amount of money. I could care less about performance, thats why I have my turbo AWD Talon.
The D-series motors are cheap, plentiful, easy to work on, and have great fuel economy. Please read the first part of my post. I find a lot of Integra shells, but I'm not willing to waste $2K+ for a B-series motor and trans, when you'd only be running 14's, and when I can find D-series motors and trans for less than $500 complete.
Remember, this is for a budget daily driver, not str33t r@c3r.
Thanks.

Great idea to combat the rising gas costs. $3.87 for 91 octane over here, can't help you with the swap, but there was a type-r that did the swap, try searching in that forum.

20ls01, alexisthemovie, and 1badteg,
I understand that an Integra weighs more than a Civic. I'd rather prefer the Acura, as it seems like a car that I can live with on a more daily basis. From what I've heard, there were factory D-series 94+ Integras in Japan. My sister has an EG Civak sedan, and I hate the interior. I spent some time behind the wheel of an Integra, and I like the dash layout, and the creature comforts such as leather, power windows, locks, etc. I also like not being able to hear every bump on the road, and I like the appearance over a Civic. Also, I can find the Integra shells cheap.
Sam92Teg,
Around here, B18B's are expensive. A B18A might be an option, as I find whole cars for <$500. A B18A does seem like an option, but as of now, I'd like to find more information about a D16Z6 in a DC.
micha,
Yes, I understand that a GSR would net higher insurance. I am a responsible driver, and have ZERO points, and I have a great insurance company. My old NT Talon's insurance costed just as much as one of my turbo-AWD Talons. I found a GSR shell, but I see other shells (i.e. LS/RS) as well.
I know someone who has done it to a 94 GSR. Some of you might know him, his name is Adam, from MI. He said he averaged 47.7mpg, CITY with his. (D15 w/CX trans).
I'm not new to cars at all, and I'm pretty firm on what I want to do. I don't need advice wheter if I should do it or not, I want to so people who have done it, or can find me links on other people's write-ups.
Thanks for staying on topic, any other advice would help.

I meant weighs, not "ways." I can't believe I said it. LOL.
Anyways, I having the extra weight isn't an issue for me, I'd rather have 200lbs and have the looks and creature comfort, and lose 1-2mpg, than not. I mean, we're paying up the *** for gas anyways, right?

He's right the weight of the teggy will require you to redline every gear to get the car to move right as to how fast you are tryin to move it i dont know because i've never driven one so i dont kno if this is exxagerated or not. better of getting yourself a cx hatch or even a vx to deal with fuel economy if that is what your really after.

sorry hadnt read your response up top
Hey go for it but may I suggest to get a vtec sohc...just so you have the xtra power in case you need it i mean you only waste gas if you mash the throttle so shouldnt matter...
as far as your original question well people drop in B series motor in civic so i would imagine that works the same way in reverse (d series in integra) although i do think there is an issue with one of the motor mounts.

No, again, weight shouldn't be a problem at all. From what I see, Honda owners pay a lot of attention to weight, but they don't think of relative weight.
A GS-R Hatch weighs 2667lbs.
A EG EX Sedan weighs 2522lbs
That is a 145lb difference, about the weight of a passenger. You never see people in Civics redline every gear, when they're with a passenger. If weight were that much of an issue.
Now, keep in mind that a D-series engine weighs less than a B-series.
A 2000 Civic Si weighs 2612lbs.
A 2000 Civic EX weighs 2513lbs.
That is a 99lbs difference.
In total, the D16 engine would pull a total of 46lbs more than normal. Estimating through refrence, the D-series Integra would weigh 2568lbs, 46lbs would be a 1.79% of the total in weight. Relatively, thats nothing.
Again, WEIGHT SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE.

From what I've gathered:
Mounts: I can use the stock mounts. B-series and D-series mounts are the same.
Wiring harness
I can go two routes:
1.) Since the Integra wiring harness is two-part, I can use the wiring harness from a 92-95 Civic Si/EX, 94-95 Integra, or 93-95 Del Sol, and it will be "PnP" with the D16Z6 motor.
2.) The other route would be to use the stock wiring harness, use a B-series alternator or snip/splice a D-series plug and use a D-series alternator. The only way to address the dizzy would be to use a OBD2 D-series dizzy.
What would be my cheapest option for an ECU? What about the cable-hydro tranny mess? Which one is which?
Thanks again,
-Tahleel

Cheers to you if you do this project. my friend has a D-series with a small turbo that put down 226whp.. that little thing zips. and completely owns me in MPG
i think the project all together cost him barely over $3,500 (he put his own turbo kit together but did use a DSM turbo and tuned it himself).
Theres nothing wrong with putting a D-series set up in a Teg! D-series are cheap and fun little motors. Good luck if you go thru with this.
