My key cylinder bracket is broken(due to theft). I need to change it out but am unsure how to properly remove the two bolts (circled) on the bracket. I was told to "chistle" it loose but I was hoping there is another way to do it?

That or take a dremel to them. THey are specialy designed for the head to snap off once a certain torque has been applied (as in they tighten up and snap off) to help foil theves. Or repairs depending on how you look at it.

 

Drill a hole (dont remember the size but small) directly down the center and it will break up the head to reveal an allen key. Get the right allen key and take it off.

 

And I suppose do the same to get them back on? What do I drill it with?

OH is that how it works? Hmm I wasnt aware of that. Other cars I had worked on, we just dremeled (well it was an air tool) the head of the bolt off.

 

Then what did you guys do to bolt on the replacement one?

 

You can use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer. place the screwdriver at an angle (so the screw will unwind counterclockwise ) and hit the screwdriver with the hammer. I believe you have to get new screws for them and when you torque them down to the correct specs the suppose to break off and you have that flat smooth head on top.

 

Oohh ok, so I have to get new bolts...ok cool. What tool should I use to do it? Can it be any power typical power tool found in a typical garage?

 

Also to replace it, all I have to do is take off the little wire harness and the part where you insert the key and swap it out with the replacement right?

 

Bump for help on how to keep my original key cylinder during the replacement.

 

Just be thankful its not a mercedes. At work we usually try to dremal the middle part but if that doesnt work(sometimes it doesnt) then you break out the air hammer and just try your best not to hammer the dash and steering colume too bad. Its a shitty job that no wants to do.

 

Thanks for the reply. I already know how to remove the bracket and I even have the brand new replacement bolts from Honda. What I would like to know is could I take apart the ignition cylinder and swap out both ends onto the new replacement bracket.

This is the last step. I just need to know this and Ill be able to drive to work again.

 

Use some needle nose vise grips. They are not that tight.

 

Oh ok so just needle nose the ends.

 

I just drilled the thing out and used a screw driver, but again I had no intensions of actually replacing it until I got pulled over (cop got some weird ideas about me stealing the car O.o). This was also on a nissan pathfinder...though I don't know that it'll make that much difference.

haha, yeah, the kings of rediculously hard ignitions to crack. Even the early 90's model had it so it was behind the sidebar of the steering wheel so you couldn't get a line of site on it to use a slapjack or drill...Funny ****.

 

is the ignition messed up? if not pm me ill tell you how to take the tumbler uot ;]

 

Why cant you tell me here? Oh well msg sent. I really need to finish this as soon as possible because I need to use my car to go to work. My ignition works fine its just the bracket is broken, so I need to switch it out with one that isnt broken. (See top of page). In doing that I need to figure out how to unbolt both ends of the key cylinder and swap them with the replacement one.

 

Here it is again, are the 2 parts interchangeable? If yes how do you do it?

 

ok here we go


ok first stick the key in and turn it to the number 1 postion(dont ask how i got it there with no key )

next make sure theres no screws holding the tumbler in... like this one

this is the pin you have to press down

get sumin small(i used a toothpick) to push the pin down

this is what it should look like

now while pushing the pin down pull the tumbler out, it should slide right out un less you missed the screw...

thats it any more problem lmk
