I am looking at buying my motor from Hmotorsonline and they have both the JDM and USDM B18C. If i get the JDM one do i have to get a different wiring harness or a converter or sumthing?

 

The jdm harness is made for a right hand drive car so the plugs are on opposite sides. i've seen a guy that extended the wires and made one work but it looked like hell and i think it would be a lot easier to just use a u.s. harness

 

yeah, you'll want to use your existing harness on the B18C engine and modify it as in add VTEC, knock sensor, and IAB wiring...

 

you could get a jdm motor and use a usdm harness, or mod your stock harness

what is this IAB wiring you speak of ?

 

IAB is the butterflies in the GSR intake manifold.
You need to wires for the Intake Air Bypass control solenoid valve.

The jdm engine comes with the rhd harnesses, but you can get the connectors to reach without extending any wires.
The only wire I could not get to reach was the thick white wire that runs from your alternator to the fuse box. So I just took that wire out of the stock harness.

its the wiring that goes to the IAB solenoid sensor located under the GSR intake manifold as seen here:

 

 

looks like some good info.... so if i were putting a jdm b18c in my 94 civic coupe would i have to get a completely different wiring harness?

best bet is to remove them from the JDM harness that comes with your motor and add them to your civics harness good luck

 

anybody have any tips on this? i havent ever put a b18 in before.

 

you have to be patient when you do this, if you do you can achieve a really factory looking swap.

take the JDM harness that comes with you motor locate the plugs you need (i.e knock, IAB) and trace the wires through the JDM harness back to the cannon plugs( the ones that connect at the shock tower) they may have been cut off. then slowly and carefully remove them from the harness.

after removing them you can add them to your ex harness when you get the motor out. you may have to add some length to wires if you do recommend soldering them.

when you are removing the knock sensor it is a shielded wire and the shielding is clamp to another ground in the harness, you see what I'm talking about when you get to it. I put a ring on mine and grounded it to the thermestat.

once you have added the wires to the ex harness you have the to run the wires from the the other side of the cannon plugs, under the battery to the ecu. hondapartshero sells the pins you need to add the wires to the ecu the ecu.

take this in, if you think you still want to do this, I will help you when you need it.

there are easier ways to do this, but IMO I think this gives you the best oem look and reliability.

*edit* also while you are working on the harness, you will need to seperate the O2 sensor wires from the wire loom, don't actually remove them just seperate them. you will be relocating them. they need to be able to reach between the cat and the back of the motor. as this is where your O2 will be located on the gsr. on the ex it is located close to the head. rewrap them with tape. this way you can avoid splicing the crucial O2 wires.

I did a JDM b16a into a 94 ex, only difference between a b16a and gsr swap is the Iab and header

 

i also been told to get a usdm GSR harness.... would this be better or would doing what you were saying (using the ex harness) be better?

 

yes the gsr harness would make it easier, but you would still have to add the IAB and knock wires from the shock tower to the ecu.

gsr harness is ideal, but not nessecary, depends on your cash flow

 

ok sorry to but into this convo but i got a quick question, since you all have some experience with b18c1..... i just did my b18c1 swap into my 92 dx hatch.. to run those IAB wires and the KNOCK sensor.. i take i have to pull my intake manifold off to get to it.. do you happen to know what colors they are and where the ecu they plug into.. because i keep getting told i need to do this.. but what colors are they, and where on a obd1 ecu do they plug into.. ya i did b18c1 and converted it to obd1.. any suggestions?
