B-series transmission oil preference - road race application
just wondering what people running a B-series transmission, or any for that matter, are running for trans oil. it will be a hpde/autocross setup.
factory honda maybe isn't best, so what are some of the options and experiences.

I've been using Amsoil Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid with great success, cleaned up a small 3rd gear grind and have been using it for the whole season without having to change it yet.
Definitely recommend it.

Torco MTF and RTF mixture. Works excellent with Quaife, Cusco, Kaaz and Oem R diffs.

ive been running the same OEM fluid all year (d16 box w/quaife and DX final drive)
shifting hasnt changed (had a slight 3rd chirp, still does)
i probably should change that. i've kind of been waiting for it to die, and it doesnt change. 10 days on it this year...or maybe 11. cant remember.
is that torco stuff that much better?

there is a good MTF thread in my faq post, but the consensus was Honda MTF and GM synchromesh is on the thin side for track use.

Talked with the one of the guys at AfterHours... After walking me thru re-assembling my Mfactory plate diff like Renans (60% lock) he recomended Honda MTF with GM syncromesh. Seems thin and I will be trying something different. Torco, Amsoil and Redline are on the list.

i have some bottles of Royal purple synchromax laying in my garage.. i was wondering if anybody had experienced it? I was about to sell them to a friend who says he's gears are hard to shift in. I know people usually love redline MT-90 for solving light shifting problems but i was wondering if royal purple would work as good?

I have used Honda MTF for all of my 2011 road race events of brutal rape (8 full days, 4-6 20 minutes of non stop action) and still don't have any problems till this day.. fluid always comes out in good condition

With honda mtf in the trans, I screwed up a synchro. With MT-90, I haven't messed anything up yet. On their website, MFactory says you should use Torco RTF and not gear oil, but they don't really make a coherent argument as to why.

Oh wow, I thought it was common knowledge that Honda synchros absolutely HATE full synthetic fluid as it's too slippery for them and eventually you'll get "the crunchy" feeling.
I'd run regular 10w-30 over Amsoil or Redline as I've experienced this all first hand after a rebuild. I put in Pennzoil synchromesh (not full syn) and half Honda MTL and the transmission did what it was supposed to do. With Redline and Amsoil I got "the crunch".
edit: Torco has developed their fluid to be appropriate for Honda Synchros. I have not used it myself but it seems to be a big hit for people who had the Redline/Amsoil blues.

What exactly are the symptoms of transmission fluid getting too hot? If I'm not mistaken people have logged 300 degree temps. The "new" Honda MTF is rubbish if you ask me. It looks like water in both color and consistency lol. I would love to switch to something else but I fear I things will get crunchy until it maybe heats up?

I ran Honda MTL in a 4 hour enduro and never had the problems I had with Amsoil or Redline. It might be thin but it still works. However, the Pennzoil seems to be a better fluid at those high temps.

I think I need something a little better though, maybe the motul or some torco.

FWIW, the honda mtl was in the car for three events (a total of about 4 hours over 5 days) when the third gear synchro got screwed up. I think I blew the sychro with bad shifting between about 0:41 and 0:51 on this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsPhK...TP-jCI8XvUrphH After this session, the car didn't feel right. It wasn't a catastophic failure (like no broken pieces in the trans), but the 3rd gear synchro was really worn. I filled the trans with MT-90 after installing carbon-lined synchrotech synchros and haven't had an issue in about 10 hours of track time (on the same fluid). The car is heavily tracked and had many events on it before the sequence of events leading up to the synchro failure, so I'm not sure how much I should chalk up to fluid and how much to wear, tear, abuse, and driver inexperience. I really wish that there were some sort of consensus on which fluid is the best to use, but it doesn't seem that anyone knows why one product should work better than another. ugh
