Resetting 96' Civic EX Factory Alarm
My 1996 Civic EX alarm would not turn off. I called several Honda dealerships in the Dallas metropolitan area to find out how to reset it. Of course, each one was mum on the procedure. Each service rep I talked to wanted me to have the car towed in to have "a technician look at it." I searched high and low on the Internet for a solution as well. No luck.
Well, my boss, who happens to be a nice lady, calls a H dealership on my behalf. She describes the problem and the service rep walks her through resetting the alarm step by step.
Sometimes when you can't get what you want from Honda have your wife, girlfriend, or boss ask for you!
- Turn Ignition Key to On position (position II)
- Press bar and hold small horizontal bar located in between the AM/FM and CD Tape buttons
- Wait until door locks cycle
- Press and hold one of the buttons on the alarm remote
- The door locks should cycle again
- Release horizontal bar between AM/FM and CD Tape buttons
- You're done!
I debated about putting this procedure out here. But, lets face it, if someone wants your car or what's inside of it the factory alarm is not going to stop them! Besides Honda needs to stop screwing us and pass this info on rather nickle and diming us to death.

Re: Resetting 96' Civic EX Factory Alarm
This nearly brought me to tears... THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!
I doubt that you'll come back & read this 10 years after you posted this, but if you do or WHEN somebody else finds this & wonders, "Does that REALLY work"?
I replaced the radio in my wife's '96 Civic EX & the alarm stopped working correctly. It no longer worked with the remotes, kept rearming itself in a few seconds (NOT cool if you step out of the car for something & your doors basically LOCK behind you WITH the key inside). I tried everything I knew how to do, used GOOGLE until my fingers go tired of typing & my mousing hand could click no more. I looked a LOTS & LOTS of articles & forums. I worked on this problem for 3 days & probably 17 hours or so.
As I was describing my problem to my brother (a Certified Master Mechanic) & he was asking me questions, it hit me. Just exactly how to search for the answer to my problem. I hit Google. It led me here!!!
Let me tell you, THIS WORKS!! Follow the steps & it WILL bring success. I am SO happy that someone took the time to FIND these steps. THEN took the time to write them out & post them here. It's nice to know that there are still people in this world that are NOT always thinking of themselves & ARE thinking of others.
The Honda-Tech forum has helped me more times than I can count too. THANK YOU!!!
