Progress of the body and paint sub-project of the 1994 EJ Ex.

Honda

Model:
Civic

Trim:
Ex

Vehicle nickname:
Purple Pipe Dream

State:
GA

Generation:
5

Driving Environment:
suburban

Transmission:
manual

2WD/4WD:
2WD

How fast do you drive?:

Highway / City %:
50

Tracking started on:

Tell the world a little bit about your vehicle
I bought this EJ from a guy in Buford Georgia to use as a (plan B) car while I got the EH Si (plan A car) project started. Because it was such a piece of junk at that time, the D16Z engine and drive-train didn't last long enough to get that project completed. It turned into a engine swap out of necessity and a whole-car transformation learning-tool out of preference to gain a solid hands-on working knowledge of the EJ/EG platforms.

Engine/Drivetrain Modifications:
As a basic daily-use car, just a B18C1 swap with stage 2 cams, .5mm larger valves, adjustable cam gears, new valve springs and retainers, 3 angle valve job with greater flow-volume boweled chambers., after-market intake manifold, 70mm TB, stainless steel header, custom exhaust system with glass-pack resonator, and a nice looking Japanese can that I picked-up from a salvage yard.

Suspension Modifications:
Tighter ratio GSR power-steering rack, rear (GSR) disk-brake swap, stainless steel flex brake lines, rebuilt the rear calipers (new rotters), GSR front calipers (same as civic) new slotted rotters, 40/40 brake proportion valve swap, 1" master cylinder swap, ploy-bushings everywhere, adjustable coil-overs, camber kits both front and back, toe kit in back, sub-frame brace in back with Type-R sway bar and adjustable end-links, aluminum LCA's in back, GSR (larger outside diameter poly-bushed) LCA's up front, larger diameter upper ball joints, Type-R sway bar up front.

Wheels/Tires Modifications:
LS 15" wheels. The tires on em are about 85-90% so I kept them.

Interior/Exterior Modifications:
Replaced the broken dash and atmosphere control console and control unit that some rat-bastard broke to get-at and steel a stereo that wasn't even there. Replaced the heater core. Removed the *view-obstructing* dorky interior brake light assembly in exchange for the LED brake light in the wing, which ah, urr, &^%$*, ah-hum, ah-hum, also obstructs the view - probably even more; (ok, ok, I just like the wing and the cool LED's).

08/01/2013 Update: Gonna go wingless. I've seen a few lately that have been all done-up and they look pretty nice. I'm gonna have to find the dorky brake light fixture and see if I can convert it to LED somehow.

11/30/2013 Update: Body and paint work done.

Future Modifications:
Replace door pillar moldings. Repair or replace R/H window switch. Replace the broken gauge cluster, fabric-recover the door panels and the rear dash where I removed the brake light assembly. Replace the worn-through carpet. Buy a R/H seat. Maybe install the rear seat bench? Maybe NOT!!!

D/C powered air conditioning compressor prototype to refine and extend that system to also cool a air/water inter-cooler tank. (Chart circulating operating temps next summer.)
D/C powered power-steering pump prototype.
After-market aluminum VW Scirocco radiator.
15v ultra capacitor boost-pack battery replacement prototype.

Test platform for the air/water system prototype to be ultimately used in the EG B18B LWR/GSR UPR turbo set-up. Read more »

Starting point first photo. Out of the weeds and off the blocks! Man, does this car have a long way to go!

Despite the fact that it has no engine, transmission or cooling system, and that the body is basically a dented non-rusty core with a collection of donor parts, it's nice to see it rolling, steerable and stoppable again.

Verifying the numbers of the sub-structure. Looking-back at this process, I should have confirmed this first to see if it was worth continuing. Buying a car with repair work is fine, as-long-as the frame or sub-boby can be verified as perpendicular and parallel (ie, straight). The sub-structure numbers behind the quarter panel and throughout measured-out rock-solid *PERFECT*.

There was slight compression of the lower core-support section that I did when I 5 MPHed rear-ended the droid just north of Atlanta. That .375" compression pulled back out with no problem.

The original messed-up L/H quarter metal-work (done by the original owner) The body job's biggest expense other than the body prep blocking and color application. Everyone (5 out of 6 estimates) said replace the panel. OUCH!!!$$$

Auto Image in Woodstock, GA (Old-school) said fix and straighten it. Here's the before. It's the last owner's attempt at getting all of the severe damage to a workable level where the old body lines can be seen. It still presents a need of much work. We'll see.

Here's the first major body damage hurdle. Maybe it doesn't seem like much to most, but to me... A couple dozen more welded stud pulls later. The wheel-well is starting to take shape.

Hey there's the rear disk brake swap off of the GSR donner.

The tech said that the wheel-well straighten was a pain, but it's done, and done right on both sides. Ready for primer, paint and seal.

Quarter panel finished and smooth as a baby's butt. Half the price of a panel replacement job and kept the integrity of the factory welds. Way to go Auto Image!

Get rid of the crap after-market lousy-fit and finish (Certi-fit) replacement fender. With the cheep (acceptable quality) hit-or-miss strategy, it was a miss. Lesson learned!

That hood seen here (off of the 92 EG) is so delaminated and dinged, it's gonna have to go too. I ordered a new one yesterday (2013-02-15).

The used OEM L/H fender, that I got *cheep* from Marietta Salvage, temp installed. After fixing the small dent and ding it had, it's a much better fit. Imagine that!

I'm thinking about doing the JDM signal mod.

R/H side fender prep work completed. Lots of ding pull-outs. I didn't realize just how many dings this used OEM fender had when I got it. Lesson learned: spray used body parts being considered for purchase with a water-spray bottle and look at the panels in a water-sheen. It's a whole lot easier to see subtle body issues.

R/H quarter panel during "ding/dent discovery. The R/H door is way too dented and dinged to be reasonably (cost-effective) fixed. I'll have to start looking for another one this weekend.

3-3-13 update: I found one!!!!!!! An OEM 98% door shell at Marietta Salvage for cheep. Only has two small dings and needs color change paint job. I should have taken some vid clips of the looks I got while transporting it strapped on top of my piece of crap Ford Torus.

Straight R/H quarter panel, but the door's gonna have to go. Way too many dents to be cost effective vs a used OEM replacement.

L/H door straightened. Gotta locate a door shell for the R/H side - too many dents = too expensive to repair.

Finally got the replacement R/H door shell that I bought from Marietta Salvage blocked and mounted. Even the inside (that's already been repainted) is better than the original one. Got the base color on the fenders and hood, although you probably wouldn't notice as everything's covered in Georgia tree pollen.

New L/H quarter window and seal. No one that I'm aware of sells the new seals for these windows any more so I had to go with an OEM replacement window/with seal attached. If anyone knows of an aftermarket source, please PM me.

Replace the rear glass seals and fix defogger element is the plan.
- I still need to get to replacing that rear dash cloth and filling-in the hole left from the removed 3rd light.
- Sooner or later I'm gonna have to get some speakers and a shark-fin antenna.

Same quarter-panel glass and seal issue for the R/H side. Currently, to my knowledge, only available as window/seal assembly via OEM. If anyone knows where I can pick-up new rubber seals for these, please PM me.

Well, the removable pieces are starting to get "purpleized". We did discover that the impact-bar was crap (bent-in as shown) and that a replacement was in order, so I went down to Marietta Auto Salvage again and got a super deal on one from a 93 EJ donner.

Purpleized!! Back to being one color again. Oh ya! In order to perfect the gaps on this side between the fender and hood, the hood mount had to be moved a smidge. It came out great! gaps and points are all fine, probably for the first time in it's post production service life.

Trunk painted and L/H rear glass panel in. They painted the OEM wing and forgot to weld the trunk holes, so it looks like I'm gonna see how the wing looks before I decide to delete it for good. On a critical note, it looks-like I'm gonna have to adjust the L/H side of the trunk fit (up a tad) as the lenses don't quite line-up perfectly. No big deal.

Update 09-21-2013: Talked to the shop owner and his error on the wing holes not being welded-up before color shoot and painting the wing. That'll be fixed soon.

Update 10-11-2013: Got the wing holes welded and primered. Gotta take the trunk off to re-shoot it. Got the replacement rear impact bar installed.

Trunk painted and R/H rear glass panel in. I still have to check for breaks in the defogger circuit before we mount the rear glass. I would like for that to work for once. The impact beam is also painted, just haven't changed it out yet. The light lens lines line-up pretty good on this side but not so good on the other.

9-30-2013 Update: Turned out that the defogger circuit only had a break at one of the tabs. It's soldered and repaired. Ought to have the glass back in within a couple days.

Maybe I should've waited before I cut and fit for the inter-cooler before we painted this, but... it's done anyways.

Hood shot. For some reason, this photo represents the color better than the others. Maybe it was just better lighting. Ironically, I never thought that I'd own a purple car - but here we are.
