Icon2 winter tire tread width for 97 EL

I have a 97 1.6 EL and the stock (and my current) tire size is P195/55R15.

Would there be any problem with going P165/75R14 for winter tires?

The overall diameter for stock is 595 mm, and these are 603 mm. It is a 3.4% difference. Unless proven otherwise, i don't think diameter is an issue.

The potential issue i can see is tread width. In the summer i am running 195mm, is there going to be an issue in the winter will only running 165mm?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

165 treadwidth tires are really narrow for your car, 30 mm narrower than stock, which is a big difference. I wouldn't recommend it. They also might be too narrow for your wheels.

Since you have 14" wheels, you'll find a good selection of winter tires in 185/65-14 and they will work perfectly on your car.

Also, FWIW, your math is off; the diameters are indeed 595.5 mm and 603.1 mm, but the difference is actually 1.3 percent.

165/75-14 would be too narrow. You could actually go with 175/70-14 but the selection suffers there. Thankfully, we have the Michelin Xi2 in that size, so that might be an option too.

Two of the best winter tires are available in 185/65-14: the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 and the Michelin X-Ice Xi2. If you want to save a few bucks, two others that are less expensive in that size are the Continental ExtremeWinterContact and the Dunlop Graspic DS-3.

How wide are those 14" wheels? Or, if they're Honda/Acura stock wheels, what car are they from?

(If you have to measure the width, measure at the bead, where the inside edge of the tire sits, and not from the outer edge of the lip.)

The reason i asked about this specific size is that there is a local tire shop that has this set mounted on some 14 inch steelies and are on display in the front shop. He is offereing a huge discount. But i suspected that they would be too narrow.

Thanks to you all.
