Alright, so im in the market for tires, and americas tires quoted me $300 for 205/50/15s mounted and balanced. From what I read the AST, is not that good of a tire. Any imput on its performance and its life? Will the ASX last longer? Do I have any better options for the same price??
Get the ASX. It's much better in every way except it's slightly more expensive.
Theoretically, the ASX should last slightly longer (5 percent longer) than the AST because it has a higher treadwear rating (420 for the ASX, 400 for the AST).
The ASX is the best option for the money if you drive in snow and you need all-season tires. If you never drive in snow, summer tires (like the Kumho SPT) will give you better performance.

No. The Z is a speed rating, and speed ratings have nothing to do with treadlife. The treadwear rating is designed to rate treadlife, and while it's not always precisely accurate, it says that the ASX will last slightly longer than the AST, all else being equal.
