Default Permanently marking wheels

So, I live in a hotbed of getting your junk stolen. I've had a set of wheels stolen out of my backyard, and have at least three friends get the wheels stolen off their cars in the last month or so - and none of us even live in crummy neighborhoods! Just a crummy city.

Anyway, on of my friends who is a tech at the shop where I work had a set of wheels stolen off of his truck, and the police told him that there wasn't much they could do, and even if he found them, without them having a permanent marking it would be hard to prove. He got his replacement wheels and before mounting his tires, he marked them with his initials using a metal punch. This seems like a fantastic idea, but sketches me out big time. His are really big SUV wheels (20x10) and will probably be just fine absorbing an impact like that... but mine...

I have a set of 949racing 6ULs, and I can't imagine they are crappy and brittle, but would this be an ok way to mark a set of wheels? How would you, do you, mark your wheels? Paint can be cleaned or sanded off, but I am afraid to go striking my wheels with a metal punch. What do you do? What is acceptable way?

I'm guessing you have never heard of the simple process called engraving?
