Need Feedback on Tires
Sometime soon (this Christmas), I will be needing new tires.
I have had no problems with my Ecsta 711's. I have learned that they have been discontinued.
Conditions: Relatively conservative driver, want all-season type due to rain and on-off harsh winters. Definitely want to be ready for snow. The best combo of all-season and some performance.
Price Range: ~ $225 for set.
Car: 1995 Honda Accord
Size: 195/60/15
Possibilities:
Falken Ziex ZE-912 http://www.discounttiredirect....e&fcb=
Thanks!!!

I saw that, but some of the reviews make me hesitant for when I need to drive in the snow. Winters aren't too harsh in KY, but ice and snow are a problem.
any thoughts?
Thanks for the reply.

I have never had them but the people on this board that, who's opinion I trust, think very highly of that tire.
Customer reviews are highly unpredictable. They are based on expectations and inexperience. Back to back controlled testing is a much better way to determine the performance of a tire.
If you are really worried about snow and ice just get some steel wheels and put some winter tires on them. That way you can put some summer tires on your alloys. This way you will have superior traction on the winter and in the summer. However, I should tell you that I am completely unfamiliar with what winters are like in KY.
Hope that helps, if you wait a day or two you will probably get some much better response from others.

I recommend the Kumho ASX, too. It's one of the very best all-season tires you can buy, and it costs less than anything anywhere near its capabilities. It's much much MUCH better than the Falken Ziex ZE-912.
The customer reviews on the websites are not very reliable, because people are biased based on their expectations for a tire. There are some tires bought by people who don't have a lot of experience with different tires, and this can skew their responses more or less favorably than the tires deserve.
Incidentally, your current tires (Kumho 711) are not all-season tires. They are summer tires (and not very good ones, either). I'm sure they are terrible in snow and ice.

Hmm. I may have to look at buying the ASXs. My Ecsta 711s were fine in the snow and ice, FWIW.
Have you ever had these? and driven in the snow or ice? I don't like driving in the snow/ice anyway, but just in case.
Thanks!

I've driven on them in other people's cars. They're as good in snow and ice as any all-season tire, and better than most others.

Now, do you know why they are so damn cheap?

I'm not an expert on tire pricing; all I know is the prices I see posted on websites. What I think is weird is that the ASX in 195/60-15 is $46, but the ASX in 195/55-15 (stock size for many Integras) is $65. Why is the larger tire less expensive? You would think it uses less rubber. I don't know why; I can only guess it has to do with supply and demand, availability of competing tires in each size, stuff like that.
I do know that $46 is an amazingly low price for an all-season tire this good. If I needed an all-season tire in that size, that's the one I would get.

Yeah, it is quite odd, but I'm not complaining.
Thanks!

Ha, I'm currently only a few hundred miles east of you. Yea, our winters are pretty variable aren't they. 70 degrees yesterday and now down into the 30's today. I've had great results using both the ASX and the BF Goodrich Traction T/A's in the winters. The T/A's gave far better snow/ice traction than the ASX, but they did have balancing problems.
Since snow removal is virtually nonexistant in KY, it was tempting for me to get a winter tire set but we have so many mild days you'll wear through them quickly. Maybe the new governor will turn things around an buy a few more plows.

Okay, so I think the best deal I can find since TireRack doesn't offer Free Shipping is from TreaDepot. I called and they said they can't price match TR's $46/tire, but I will save a little more by buying from them at $52/tire and Free Shipping.
$52 x 4 + $40 installation, mounting = $62 each or so.
Anyone ordered from TreaDepot?

I haven't ordered from there, but it sounds like a great deal.
Looks like it's a special deal only through December 24, not their regular policy (like it is at Discount Tire Direct). Note that it's only on tires in stock, so you may want to order quick, just so they don't run out of what you want.
Good job!
