seen a couple of cars with rims that look like copper was wondering if theres anyone out there knows how this is done and were can it be done at and how much does it run for

 

Those wheels are copper plated. It's not a paint.

What additional information do you need? They are copper plated; plated with copper.

 

just a quick suggestion, i wouldnt advise it on a daily because the copper would tend to tarnish.........just my .02

 

Use Tarn-X on a weekly basis then?

 

It is not even the fact of being driven on a daily. It will tarnish in the garage just sittin there. It would have to be in an air tight container for it not to.

There are ways to prevent tarnishing, though (for example: clearcoat).

 

You could do that, but something that shiney the first rock chip in the clear coat and then when the cooper starts to tarnish it is going to really stand out and the only way to fix it, because you just cant touch up tarnish, would be to strip the clear, remove the tarnish, then re-clear. To much hassel for a DD. Would be **** though on a show car.

Well, I have seen people powder coat the freshly plated wheels with a coat of clear powder. That pretty much makes a solid clear topcoat, that's fairly durable.

 

it depends on the metal you are plating, even the powdercoating on some metals will peel off due to it not adhering to the metal properly. on the rnr's the powdercoat just peeled right off and made the finish look terrible, then i had to replate them after that didnt work.the hassle is the only reason i would say not to use them on a daily, but i cant complain about the end result............

Curious, did you discuss chrome plating with the company that copper plated them?

With "chrome" wheels its not the chrome that is reflective, its the 2 layers of nickel plating (semi-bright nickel followed by bright nickel) that are under it. The chrome is merely used to provide a protective coating to the reflective nickel.

I've never seen what a layer of chrome directly over copper looks like, but I imagine it might survive daily use much better than raw copper.

 

So does anyone know about what this would cost to get done?

 

At work we use a lot of copper building electrical transformers. Most of the raw copper that comes in are coated with this stuff they call formbar keeps it from being tarnish, maybe the wheels can be coated with they stuff too. And that **** is tough, only way to get that stuff off is burn it with a torch.

 

actually, show chrome, or triple chrome (same thing) is done over copper. they nickle plate several times, then copper plate, then chrome plate. that is what makes super quality chrome. basically these wheels where probably done the same (Im guessing), just skipped the chrome.
I know from being around the lowriding community for so long. thats what makes the difference in chrome plating.

 

I wanted to do that a few years ago.
Then someone else did.
