alignment question

i just got an alignment but i may be getting a great deal on a set of new wheels that are 18x7.5, +40 offset (current mounted rims are 17x7, +40 offset). would an alignment be necessary after i mount the new ones?

No (assuming your car didn't need an alignment before mounting the new ones).
