is it possible to weld ti to stainless? complicating it further, can it be done with a mig? it doesn't need to be pretty, just functional. this is for a quick release exhaust setup. thanks.

stainless and mild still have iron component, stainless just has chromium that makes a layer that inhibits rust. If you weld it with mild steel wire, it turns to mild steel at the weld.
If you weld with stainless wire and CO2 you end up having a really crappy looking bead, becuase stainless takes carbon from the gas.
As for titanium and stainless, definately it wont work, besides you need a room filled with argon when you weld titanium or a closet where you put the titanium pieces and weld them in the closet.

Theres some reading. Quick answer is no. Longer answer is yes, but you will not have the ability or resources to do it.

if you have a trailing shield setup, it isn't necassary to have an argon cabinet. how do you think larger ti pipes are welded on site?

i have repaird a titanium exhaust without using a booth and it works fine...and welding the two together is possible...
its like welding thick stainless to thin......obviously the thin melts sooner. as for welding the ti to stainless, the ti will melt sooner.

All you guys are WAY over thinking this one! you can bet the farm my good buddy JB can stick the two pieces together, if by some chance he can't than I know my other buddy Duct can get it done ;-)

You beat me to it. The only commerical methods I know off for bonding titanium to steel would be an inertia method.
