Default Swaybar material?

I want to bend up a simple swaybar for my car. Im assuming they are made out of some sort of spring steel. Do you guys know where I could get the material? Looking for something in the 3/4 inch range but would like a few different sizes so I can experiment.

Thanks

Swaybars are made from normalized 4130 chromoly solid bar. It's not something that can be bent DIY.

If you want to get real baller you should install a splined bar with knifed sway bar arms.

Rotate the arms to adjust the rate.

The yellow blade is rotated to change the stiffness of the bar.

When the blades are vertical, they're very stiff. When horizontal, they flex in addition to the bar, reducing the total rate.

You could get a rod of spring steel, then make one similar to a spined version. The cheap way to do it would be the grind the ends flat, so you can clamp arms on like its a flat bar. The arms would just need to be slotted, slid on, and bolted tight. Just beware that grinding and welding spring steel can change it's 'spring' properties.

Mcmaster.com sells lots of alloys (so will your local steel place), although I'm not really sure what to use. The stuff other sites say is good spring steel (W1, 1045, etc) would be under $20 for a 3/4"x36" rod. I think the splined versions with stiff arms would end up stiffer than a normal bar, since the ends don't bend like normal bent-bar sways.

there's a lot of nice fab going on throughout that build. wish I knew enough of whatever Scandinavian language that was to understand what was going on.

That should let you at least get a rudimentary idea of what's going on. If there's anything specific you want translated let me know.
