Default subaru powered bug

Thought you guys would appreciate my bug project. I had a turbo honda but got rid of it before it got stolen. This has been my long term project though. I originally built it with a money sucking 3 liter type 4 914 engine with full injection, dry sump, turbo and everything else possible. I soon got tired of fixing it and buying the c16 required to run it. So i sold the motor and put in a subi 2.5 with a 60 trim in hopes to actually be able to drive it and get gas at a gas station. And i entered the wonderfull world of megasquirt since a sold my sds with the first motor. Wich was a project of its own.... but it fired up tonight and i just had to show somebody So here goes.

before.

And now.

And the startup video

I don't know if this is an appropriate post but the vw community frowns on this kind of stuff and i knew most of you guys would appreciate the work.

Thats one of the sickest things I have ever seen in my life.

It looks like a lot of time and quality work was put into it.I can't Imagine how fast that super light car will go.

Motor setup looks clean and quality work done, should be able to yank the wheels Gotta love the air cooled motors though they make some serious power

Don't know what that is but im just a mechanic at a vw shop. Im guessing u asked me that because of the stainless i used? I am lucky enough to live around the corner from a company called stainless distributors. It's a giant wharehouse full of stainless and they made the mistake of letting me enter it . So much cool stuff and they laugh at me when i tell them i use it for turbo stuff.

Thaks for all the comments

How do you like the megasquirt compared to the sds setup. I'm running ms1 version 3.0 on my 4age turbo setup. Are you using the stock subaru ignition system with your setup or will you do an edis setup?

The pedals are willwood. As for the megasquirt i love it so far, although the car hasn't left my garage yet so that might change. I assembled it myself and im runnin edis. I spent alot of time reading and building it and the harness but it all paid off. I literally only had to crank it a couple revolutions and it fired right up. Its megasquirt 2 version 3. As sad as it is i dont have a laptop yet so i have been using a 20 foot serial cable going out to the garage trying to dial the idle in. Hopefully going to pick one up off craigslist tomorrow though.

I like the way you did your intake manifold.... It's a fresh look at an old problem.

Your bug is **** I'm really starting to get a soft spot for these old school bugs. I'm probably going to buy one sooner or later and do a all motor setup with one. Nothing is a drop bolt in swap into these cars, considering their so old?

I was waiting for the radiator question....I made scoops in the rear window by tilting the whole inner quarter pannel in that feed an air box. I orginally had the intercooler there when i had the aircooled motor but the radiator took it's place quite nicely. The rad was a jeep cherokee core i made endtanks for. The pics will explain it the best. Im almost done plumbing the radiator but i should be able to take it around the block tomorrow. Oh and im going non intercooled with alky injectoin, i just couldn't make room for a decent intercooler

I can't wait to start tuning this thing. Im shooting for 300 wheel on pump wich should be easy out of a 2.5 and the car should tip the scales at 1900 pounds. The car is being built to be an autocross/fun *** stress car but im sure a few trips down the 1320 won't hurt.
