ssuspension design
I'm working on building a go kart type thing, and i'm working out the suspension details. Right now I'm thinking about using ATV based front suspension (arms, spindles, brakes, possably steering rack) and in the rear going with a satchell link, but I can't remember any of the calculations for roll center. Anyone know of a good source? I downloaded SusProg3D, but the learning curve is very steep, and I think I can do it faster longhand.
this myt help or it may not,
but ever wonderd about Formula SAE ? most of the suspension designs they do it themselves, im sure checkin sum of those cars wud give u ideas on different designs etc,
some of their teams site, explains theyr aproach/design and work, ur answer myt be sumwer ther,

i was on a fsae team, actually. But I haven't seen many using solid axles.
I used to have a book on suspension design that was awesome, but lost it and forgot what it was. Any recomendations?

chassis engineering
how to make your car handle
competition car suspension
fundamentals of vehicle dynamics
and one im getting soon:
race car vehicle dynamics
good luck.

The book dfoxengr mentioned is considered by many to be the suspension bible. Milliken and Milliken are the authors and the book is not for a novice to suspension:

For Formula SAE we also used an SAE journal that had equations relating all the relative motion of ths suspension with trig. Appoximately 40 equations and 40 unknowns, I can see if I still have a copy if you are serious about the suspension design.

I just remembered my Bocshe Automotive Handbook has some of it....but I can't find that either. I moved twice in a month and now can't find anything...
I'll definatly be checking out at least some of those books though.

I think with a satchell link your roll center will be the intersection of .... aw hell it is too complicated to explain. Lets just say don't bother with it. It will bind in roll. Go with a simple three link and a panhard rod.
engineer to win by carrol smith is very understandable. I would go with that. He deals mostly with double wishbone race car stuff, but i am sure the calc is in there somewhere.
Next time I have my computer on at home this week I'll grab the document. I have a copy as PDF but the scan is pretty bad. I'll keep you posted, but I might need someone to host the file if you want it shared on here (dont' know the legalities of that either with SAE papers).
