Default Some CNC goodness from work

so yea, i had to bring these home for them to be ready on monday. they needed to be hand brushed (done 4 hours later, woohoo) they need final touch up when i get to work. i only did so much at home since they have to be handled and risk getting scuffed a bit

what you see here are upper and lower triple clamps for a magor bike making company. these 6 parts represnt 3000 in income to our company.

These were machined from solid 6061-t6 billet on our 5axis vf3 and our 4 axis vf1

these were designed in Mastercam X

That awsome, i love the look of machined billet. Are you into biking, if so that would be awsome to manufactor parts for bikes you personally ride.

$3000

bahahahahah, sure got those suckers!

not trying to intend that the parts are anything but great.. just cant see how you managed to land the job with a quote like that.

I suppose its all in who you know.

our shops apparently have rather similar equipment

two fadal vmc15's and a 4020 on regular duty, with a couple of other more dedicated machines that run a few days out of the month..

weve put over a month of r&d into this. we were given really shitty drawings and a retarded time frame

this is just what is going out to go on demo bikes, there are another 10 pair at work. 1000 a pair. if you only knew how much material we used. thats what we sell them to the public for, to the company we made them for its less

Nice work. How do you like MCX? It still seems like it has quite a few bugs in it.

it isn't so bad once you get your icons all setup and figure out how to navigate it.

$3000 isnt a bad price depending on the time frame but you gotta pay off the 5 axis equipment since they arent cheap nor is the software to program. you can easily have 150k+ to machine a single 5 axis part

i dont use it much, but it does take some getting used to.

we landed the job at that price because we did 22 sets, which isnt alot given the setup time. and yes, it was done on a 5 axis mill, we we have over 200k in. if it were done on a 3 axis it would be less

Awesome Triple Clamps...

I assume there is Zero Flex!

Hey "Want Boost" any chance you could ask Max for a Ball Park on suspension set for my 03' ZX6R with Ohlins Triple rear and Ohlins Springs in the front (.95 Spring Rate) I Weigh 180lbs and This is for Jennings!

Thanks

eric

do you want a cartridge kit or just a respring/revalve?

there had better be zero flex, lol

and i just realized i fubard my original post. they retail to they public for 1000 a set. and its not like we just machine them blow them off and pack them. we are taking all 22 sets and hand de-burring and hand brushing them... a 3-4hour investment per part on top of machine time. so me and everyone here thinks we are giving them away a little cheap.

Those look awesome.

Were you able to keep the piece clamped down or was it repositioned? IM new to CNC work so im pretty ignorant when it comes to the processes.

doesnt seem like the 5-axis was a very wise investment, then, if you admit they could be done cheaper on a 3-axis.

we clamped it down on the trunnion and did the top and sides in one operation.
we then flipped it over and put it on the vf1 and did the bottom and then we set up the 4th axis to do the slotting, all in all i think we did 3 or 4 operations

the 5th axis was a very wise investment. as right now we are running some foot pegs. we do all all of the work except for final shaping on one operation. i did one whole run today at work, tomorrow we set up to do the other side and the logo, then tey are done. 3 days for a couple hundred parts... you be the judge

if all of the people going through engineering classes paid any attention, a machine shop wouldnt need to do R&D. We'd recieve a drawing, and make a part. simple as that. Now-- having worked in a living breathing machine shop for several years now, I realize that isnt the case. clearly not boost's fault, it happens.

that being said.. I cant see how the parts pictured would take any sort of R&D at all, its not like they're reinventing the wheel. I see a few holes that are marginally critical in diameter, and relation to eachother- machined in a block of aluminum. As far as i'm concerned, the rest is just making it pretty. Am I wrong?

i'm not trying to say he should've charged less for them, after all.. pricing under what the market will withstand is just cheating yourself. -- you know what they say.. a fool and his money----

yea, i get what youre saying. we were given a drawing that looked like it was drawn bu a 2 year old. and then once we got that all good to go, we start getting phone calls and **** to change things. thats what took the most time. plus they would say.. make it look like this and do this and we had nothing to test fit it on, etc. finally we had to go get a frame from them ( a 5k dollar solid carbon fiber frame) and do all of our mock up.

hehe, something like that

the sad part is it was this way with all of the parts... we are basically machining every metal piece for 2 bikes, the confederate hellcat and the wraith. and these are to be semi-mass producded bikes.

yum!

I need to see a 5 axis in action! are they all like this (5 axis rotor table-ish) or do some of them look like robot arms?
