yeah that looks like a$$

Guess is as good as mine?

i that pic i'm assuming you are talking about the seat belt thingy right....if so they are commonly used for the slow classes of dirt racing aka hooby stock-pure stock- enduro-fwd ect, ect, ect. to me it looks like a cage that was pulled from a dirt car and fitted to that pos.
to the op did it have a rear motor mount that was sandwiched between the motor and tranny? i cant see how anyone with a brain would mount a drag or any motor from the front only wtf???

I seriously think we should JB weld a cage together in my car, paint it and see if it goes through inspection. They are some really scary looking welds. Great penetration!

Yes, the first car does have a mid plate, but I just could not get a good picture of those welds to post

And I bet that seat belt clip welded to the cage was for a window net.

And I do believe you when win, not sure that is a good thing.

Seat belt latch is legal in NHRA, shot is really about the upper halo being low and directly over the head of the driver's seat. It is about a foot inside the the roof not close to the edge where it should be. The head of the driver was actually exposed.

The car had a mid plate with a power glide still attached to the car when he got it. It was about as bad as the rest. I wish I had the pics of the rest of the car. The body was in perfect shape with a really nice paint scheme.

A cage out of PVC would be safe than that thing. At least PVC wouldn't crack your skull if your head hit it.

There's no weld on the lower tube. I think the paint has filled some section of the seam. They might as well use magnets to hold the cage together. I've seen some hacked up race cars, but never seen one like this; this is insane.

wow.. you really should talk to the guy about his car, get a video of him talking about how he built it. should be good for a few laughs, but on a serious note that really is dangerous for a car going the track at 130+ mph

thing is a death trap with a ticker

i dont see what the problem here is. a bird crapped on some steel and they painted over it, no biggie. the more i look at the cage pics the more i wonder if the cage is "tacked" in place then some paintable silicone squirted into the seams for filler. that is terrible.

I called my NHRA Division Tech about the car i had in the shop and had him come over to examine it. I would do the same here, for the safety of the drivers and others.

Default PVC

There is a rumor of a guy running VARA here in So-Cal with a PVC cage. I've heard it from a few different folks who supposedly know the guy. Never seen it, but I'd like to

Those who "can", weld. Unforntunately, those who "can't", still weld.

Its amazing what you see out there that passes. I remember being at a bracket race a few years ago and seeing a Probe that was fully tubed but retained some of the body, narrowed and tubbed, big block, etc.. anyway, the front strut hats were held in with sheet metal screws.

The forth picture looks like a bead of RTV silicone was run across the top bracket for the motor plate.

That looks like they didn't even notch the tubes and used the welds to make up the difference.

Like I mentioned when I posted the pics, I think the cage was Stick-ed welded and then was force to wire feed over the top to make it legal. So much for being legal! I am amazed what can pass. All of my stuff is teched by a senior NHRA tech here at the shop before it leaves. I like the customers to know it has passed tech before they even pick up the car.

I guess the guy can look on the bright side - if he ever does wreck it, he won't have to worry about fixing it. Ever.

The rtv trick, I was told that once. Techs some times don't relize that rtv is used.

Why would you cover up stick welds with mig welds? Stick welding is stronger if done right.

This tech should be fired.

I wonder what tech did it. Can somebody find out from the number on the tag?
