Default Headers Galore! :)

Heres some recent pictures of the 2 sets of headers I just finished up. They are for a father/son race team, both who race dragsters. One set is steeped from 2.25" up to 2.375" with a 4.5" collector, and the other set is stepped from 2.375" up to 2.5" with a 5" collector. They are equal length at 29" +- a 1/4". Lucky for me...they come out of the box tacked up...you just have to run a weld around the seams, and weld them to the flanges. The collectors come out of the box fully welded up, and the primary tubes slip inside of them and are held on by 2 bolts kitty corner from each on the collectors. Theyre done, just need to go to the ceramic coater.

They're from Dynatech. The leader in headers in the drag racing world for the sportsman ranks. Once you get into Pro Stock and what not where every single bit counts, your talking big money. I work with a PS team and the last set we bought(have 4 sets), cost $5400. Not saying the design of these is wrong, because they are a damn nice piece for the price, defenitely not suitable for the Pro ranks.

Yeah it was a lot easier building a new set of headers for the TAFC. I love the simplicity of at least that part of the car...

HAHA. What do you mean of "that" part of the car??? They're totally simple! How we refer to them...."a motor on a tick". Most common saying in the pro stock pits at national events..."If you dont have doors and a clutch pedal, your nobody!" LOL. JK man. Good to see others into domestic stuff as well.

Well if you've been one of 4 people on a successful TAFC team you won't think it's that simple. It's all in the clutch and tuning. If it was so simple then it wouldn't be so competitive and you would see consistancy, instead it's anyones game. If you are so familar with these classes you know that.

It's all cubic dollars anyway. If you have the money to spend to have a team run for you it is "simple". When you fully understand every aspect of the car and try to make it run it's best in all conditions - it's not. There is nothing simple about running 5's at 260.

I was just kidding around man. Believe me when I say I KNOW its all in the clutch!! HAHA. Thats my job is the clutch. It defenitely is a huge challenge, which is what makes it fun. However, if you think 5's@260 is hard with 3000 horsepower and blower, try 6.7@210 with 500 cubes, 2350 lbs, and 2 carbs! DEFENITELY a totally different animal.
Again though...not being an *** or anything. Like I said, Im just glad to see someone else into domestic stuff! We may be at a track together someday...i travel all over with the pro stock team so ya never know.

Right on. I have run both classes and you can't say either are more/less difficult. Yes in TAFC we have blowers, so does everyone else in the class. Running mid 5's at 260 is hard in that class period. Running Either class requires exactly the same skills to be competitive. Running 6's at 210 is no harder. Pro Stock has just as many rules and regulations as TAFC and it's not any more difficult to get the car competetive. Not sure why you think either one is so different. I think you are kidding yourself.

Yeah I've been to most of the national events also but I'm going to be getting out of it this year I don't have the time anymore.

Again, totally not arguing...i think we should call it a debate! The one thing is this...put the money into the picture...ya i know money isnt everything. HOWEVER, when your spending $130k on a motor, a rolling chassis is $130k, trans and clutch (without spares) will cost you $25k...etc. Shows how competitive it is. TAFC is competitive and is a blast to watch, Im not taking anything away from you. BUT, you arent in the same predicament as your are with Pro Stock. When your looking for every single tiny bit...its defenitely a challenge. Anywho...

I can agree with that. However, just because people spend that kind of money in PS for that stuff doesn't mean that you aren't looking for every little bit in TAFC. In TAFC the top cars are still only winning by a few hundreths just like PS. I understand where you are coming from though.

Did you end up relocating to take that position? I bought a tig torch from you a while back and you were talking about looking a several positions. Sounds like they are local to you though. If you were in TX I'd have you come talk to me about a position in our company. I need to hire another fab guy.

Take care.

Naw...Im working all on my own now. Making it, but sometimes it gets slow. I had a chance to go work for Erica Enders(good friend of mine), based out of Texas, but shes so hectic right now trying to find sponsorship, shes all messed up. Also had a chance to go to work for a chassis guy in LA, but decided cost of living was too high for me to make it on my own down there, and Don Ness in Minnesota is a good buddy of mine as well and told me whenevr I wanted a job I had one at his place.

how come v8 headers don't use merge collectors? I am not exactly in the know when it comes to v8 stuff, but I have been around a good amount of american dirt and drag cars and none have had merge collectors. I would imagine those $5k ones have them. Is it just a matter of cost? People would rather pay $500 for a set of headers without merges than $1000 for a set with?

Many do have merge collectors. Most don't, yes it is a cost issue.

Merge collectors...dont do much! HAHA. I know Ill get flamed for that...but 2-5 horsepower or whatever defenitely aint worth the money if you ask most domestic guys. In pro stock, yes, because EVERY BIT matters. Heres a pictures of the couple sets of headers we have for the pro stock car...

Oh, and a set of headers without merge collectors, defenitely are not $500...haha. The ones pictured were $1900 for both sets, and thats cutting the guy a deal because he is gonna help me out and advertise his car for me.

I always feel like I'm missing something when I see or hear about such fast cars. Maybe its because there's developed countries where the average adult income is the same as that pair of headers, and I feel bad for those poor slobs.

I also can't see how engines like that can tally up to such an amount. I've seen forgings of exotic metals formed in machines larger than most mansions - that require days worth of machining ... that don't cost as much as that motor alone. Is it really just supply and demand? Getting jacked because you're a willing participant and its not 'really' your money? <-- can't even begin to express my confusion here

Its all about making **** work. When you find a way to make more power...you sure as hell dont give it away. Like the saying goes...money talks. Thats why everything costs so much...if your even thinking about running pro stock, you better have a huge wallet anyways, so money isnt much. Oh, and the team I am with is all privately funded with no sponsorships.

my uncle is a crew cheif for a TF dragster, and has been in drag racing since the 70. He was one of the first 5 into the 5 second club.

But anyways he always says the same thing about prostock that kyle is saying. It IS THE MOST competive class there is. Those guys spend stupid amounts of money to get tiny tiny tiny amounts of HP. The 2-5 that kyle mentioned from merge collectors is huge for them.

5 hp isn't **** in TF dragsters or funny cars.

kyle what team do you work for?
