Flaring piping question
I was wondering if anyone knows how large you can flare 2 inch pipe to? I was wondering if it'd be possible to flare a piece of 2 inch to 2.5 inch. Thanks.
I'm not really sure what you are trying to do, but I flare aluminium tube on my press with an argon bottle cap. If you get it on straight, you can get quite a bit, half an inch should be no problem with 2" tube.
It's a muffler that I'm wanting to flare. I picked it up from the scrap bin at work. I'm going for as cheap as possible or free on this project, so if I can get this muffler onto 2.5 inch pipe I'm probably going to use it. I believe it's stainless steel.
Sounds like you want an expansion - not a flare. 304 Stainless doesn't like to get expanded much over 0.25". For instance we just did a bunch of motorcycle pipes that had to be expanded from 2.25" to 2.80" OD on one end. Over 50% of them tore around 2.65-2.7" OD. Just try it and see. Worse case, cut it off, weld on a new piece of tubing and try it again.
Sorry, I wasn't sure on the terminology. I have 2 mufflers I scored. They are actually connected to an axleback section, and at the end of the piping it is expanded to about 2.25 for a slip fit. So I should be able to just hit up the exhaust shop and see what they can do about going to 2.5, if the first one tears then just use the other and 2.25 shouldn't be a problem?
